Masters in software management or MBA for PM?

Working as sde2 at Amazon India. 3 yoe Got into CMU MSSM program in silicon valley. Want to become a PM and be in that career path rather than engineering. Wanted to ask if the program now is a good choice or else to wait for an year and apply for MBA.

PM if you mean Product Management then MBA is the way. MSSM or any equipment may get you project or program management. Best way for you is to switch to TPM role within Amazon India, spend a year in India then move to Amazon US on L1 visa. Doing MS in non core engineering like MSSM is a mess, H1B Visa is even more mess. Since you already work at Amazon India moving to Amazon US is the fastest and easiest way.

Thanks a lot for the comment, it's very helpful. How easy it is to get a product management technical role within Amazon without any business degree?

Definitely the MBA if you have to pick only one. Works for both Product mgr and Project mgr

Thanks a lot for the comment! Do you think Mba not having stem extension will be a problem for getting a job and H1B?

It shouldn't be an issue. However, there are a number of inexpensive online MBA programs with IT project manager options. Apus.edu has one, and the entire degree was under $15k usd

Hey boss, I’m a software engineer and I did my mba 2 years ago . It took me 2 years to finish ( executive MBA) and it totally worth it!

Thanks for your insight! Was executive Mba part time? How did you manage the visa?

I did it in the UK at Hult International Business school. I can refer you if you want . They have campuses globally. I’m an EU citizen, I didn’t need visa. It took 2 years, one four days weekend per month. If you need any info I’m happy to help
