Broadcom has removed the maternity benefit payment that Symantec used to provide at our location, so we are now reduced to having only the minimum statutory payment from the government during maternity leave. My situation is tricky as I have been trying to conceive for over a year but have had no luck so far. I really donât want to start a new job and have to leave on maternity within the first year, or even second. Just the thought of that stresses me out. I donât know if I should leave now and wait for another year or more to try to get pregnant (which is totally soul destroying) or try to use the next few months to save like crazy and hope for the best. I feel like Iâm screwed either way. If anyone has advice, it would be greatly appreciated!
If you keep stressing about maternity leave and job and what the employer may or may not think.. that stress won't be good for your efforts to conceive. The mind and body both are equally important. You probably have at least 30 more working years left in you. No one would care if you took a break or took a maternity leave the day after joining 5 years ago. Stop over thinking and make one goal and work on it. Trying to navigate two boats at same time is receipi for disaster
Thank you đ
Hock Tan really loves his employees.
Donât worry that much about finding a new company. I know a ton of women here whoâve conceived in their first year
Thank you :)
I would recommend HPE .. they have 6 months paid leave and also reduced work week upto 3rd bday of ur baby .. and wlb is good ..
Find a new job at a better place and leave. Not worth your time working for someone which creates so much stress for you and doesnât give the basic benefit. I know a dozen folks who took off during the first year and thatâs not a big deal. Cheers and Good luck !
Thanks!
Youâve already gotten some great supportive comments here (which makes me so happy, yay Blind Women in Tech lol). It took me a solid year to conceive and that was really rough for me, because I had expectations of it happening pretty much right get away, like within 3 months. I started TTC less than 6 months after starting a new position, though. Personally I couldnât imagine putting off TTC because of starting a new position; I have wanted to be a mother my whole life and for me I also want to consider that i am in the midst of a handful of years when I am *both* financial secure enough and physically able to have a baby- so itâs a pretty unique time and I donât want to miss it. Iâve got decades left to pursue my career. All this being said I definitely think finding a company that supports new parents and continuing to TTC is a totally viable option. Anyway best of luck to you!!
Thank you for your comment đ¤ and best of luck to you and your family too!
If youâre going to leave anyway, claim constructive dismissal on the basis that theyâve unlawfully removed benefits you are due via TUPE (this holds true for PTO allowance as well) and take them to Tribunal. Youâd be doing all your soon to be ex colleagues a favour too, as it would force BC to restore those benefits to all of us.

Just leave and stop being stressed out about a company that thinks youâre disposable. Find yourself good benefits for you and your future family. I donât know why going on maternity 1-2 years in would stress you out. Itâs a couple of months, your new employer would offer the benefit â so take it.
Thank you and I see your point! Maybe Iâm overthinking it but from my experience, itâs not seen as a good thing straight after joining a new company.
I really think it depends on the culture of the company. FAANG/bigger companies in general really donât care because the culture is about taking care of employees.
