Does anyone here know anyone who has been to the International Maths Olympiad finals (or even the national levels in any country) ?

Just curious - at what age they started studying for it , how difficult it was, and the general experience.

My cousin won 3 international math Olympiads, 3 international astronomical Olympiads and 2 physics Olympiads. He started preparing when he was in 6th or 7th grade

USA curriculum is not good for math Olympiads. Almost all math Olympiad winners are from Asia, just like ACM world finals.
But he can star with gifted program. most school districts has good gifted programs.

Used to be the case, perhaps is now too. But as I see most of the team competitions in last 5-6 years are being won ~50% by USA. So things could be changing slightly. That said, yes the curriculum standard specially for Maths is lagging behind in US

Yeah, but let’s be realistic. The people who go to IMO don’t end up there because of the curriculum of whichever country they come from. The curriculum is always tailored to the lowest common denominator (aka “no child left behind”).

I went for regionals. didn't clear for nationals(India). They need proper preperarion. when I went I was able to solve only 1 out of 7 questions!! but over the years I Realized if I would have prepared I could have solved more.

I think I was 14 or 15 when i gave it. I used to live in a non metro, and school teachers had no idea about this. so basically no mentoring. if someone is interested they need to prepare and properly mentored.

I started officially preparing in the 7th grade, but started competing in the 2nd. My dad has been giving me riddles and brain teasers since I could talk.

Are you trying to come up with a parenting strategy?

I started competing on the regional level in the 2nd grade, had my first nationals in the 7th grade and qualified for the IMO for the first time in the 10th grade. Did Putnam in college once. Never won anything beyond the national level.

The equivalent of IMO for computer science.

I got through regional mathematics Olympiad several times, but couldn't get through the national. They need a strong hold of mathematics (general problem solving skills, brain teasers would help) and dedicated prep (Olympiad books). The concepts you have to apply during the exam may be a few grades higher than your current grade, but more important than that is to bring together different pieces of concepts you have studied across years and have a very strong hold on them.

Also, I am not sure if the grading has changed since then but when I was a kid, they would concentrate a lot on step-by-step solving the problem, so thought process is as important as getting the right answer.
