how hard is it for a software engineer to apply and get into Med School? Beyond preparing and taking the GMAT.

I thought tech/engineering degrees generally covers sciences in college?
Most CS degrees don't involve a year of chemistry, biology and organic chemistry.
Look up the past performance MCAT scores by demographics (races and genders are treated differently), get above average for your category, and practice saying “I want to work in underserved rural parts of the country” during your interviews. Also, having a family member as a doc helps too. They ask about that during the application process.
Never heard of the GMAT for medical school. Do you mean MCAT? Study for the interviews too. Do you have all the prereqs? I think the hardest part is that it's very competitive (a lot of good students want to go to medical school), so it's difficult to get in.

It’s a valid path as long as u have taken the prerequisites like organic chemistry. A good mcat score, great gpa, and the big plus nobody tells u is research experience in medical type lab. However u need to think do u want to become a doctor cus getting in is the easy part. You will have to give up any semblance of a life for at least 6 years 4 years of medical school and at least 2 years of residency. You need to know that you want to become a doctor, like deep down to get u through the really tough times and people that will shit on u the whole time.
It's not that hard even coming from a software background. I am planning on writing the MCAT next summer. I had a few software friends who wrote it this summer and did decent, 85 to 95 percentile. The other thing that matters is GPA and if you have 3.9 or higher for Canadian med school or 3.8 or higher for US you should get an interview atleast. If you have any kind of publication that always also helps. Some school do also put an emphasis on extracurricular involvement inside ot outside of school so that really depends on you.
