Meeting with HR tomorrow - is this always bad?

So I have a meeting schedule with HR tomorrow and I have no idea what it’s about. There were no details in the email and this was sent to me and ~10 engineers in the same org as me. This one email was sent to all of us so we all have this meeting at the same time. My manager wasn’t invited to this meeting so I’m not really sure what this meeting is about.

Anyone have any ideas?

    UPDATE: I’m not being laid off!! False alarm, this was just a meeting with an HR and a few engineers to discuss the org (since it’s a new org) and what we like about the org and what things we can improve. The HR was new to the org so she also wanted to get to know some of the engineers and she’s planning on having a few more of these sessions. This was a really cool idea on her part because as engineers we don’t really get to do this ever. But for the future I let her know to make her emails more descriptive.

    You don’t want to worry or speculate. It saps your energy and is unproductive. When you know more, please post and folks can help you process what happened and determine what to do next, if you feel you need advice.

    FWIW, I’ve only seen this happen once: when a manager was fired and they needed to do damage control with his employees. It happened in a previous org and management was worried about morale.

    Waiting is the worst part. Find something to distract you. Spend time with friends/your significant other.

      @lostAI there’s about 80 engineers in my org, this email included about 10 of us. I don’t work with any of these people on a day to day basis but I know a few (they’re on my floor).

      Sounds like a downsizing of your department which means a possible layoff.

      Here is how I was taught to handle firings / layoffs in college:

      You call the group being laid off into a meeting at a set time. Instructed to leave laptops at desks as “they won’t be needed.” While you are in the meeting, IT will revoke your permissions across all platforms so you can’t nuke a system on your way out. The “meeting” is a way to get you away from your computer long enough for IT do this.

      You’ll also get escorted out and be told that your belongings will be mailed to you so that you can’t grab any sensitive hard copy information.

      That is if this is a lay-off. It might not be.

    With multiple people on the invite, sounds like a reorg and you and your team members will be laid-off. Microsoft did something similar in the big layoff of summer 2013. They called people into a conference room with HR and were given separation packets, and, depending on their job-level, told when they’d have to be out.

    If it’s not a lay-off, you might be getting moved to another team.

    Keep us posted. Having gone through stuff like this, it’s not the end of the world even though it feels like it.

    May be performance review or they might be doing something in small batches?

    Good luck and just think about this when trying to fall asleep - the easiest way to grow up compensation wise is to switch companies. If this is about a layoff you have complete idiots in the HR. Nobody in their right mind will give you a night notice. I've been laid off three times and they did it with a group email but it was sent 30-60 minutes before the meeting.

    If it was a personnel issue, it wouldn’t be a group meeting.

    If it was a layoff, your manager would be included. Likewise with a reorganization.

    I guess part of the upside of working in a company that's constantly in "turnaround" is that you get really good at handling these (I've had three in the last eight working days).

    At my employer, this would be an announcement of an org change of some type. Perhaps the manager is leaving (voluntarily or involuntarily - it could even be a promotion for them). Perhaps the team is being moved to a new manager. Perhaps a key contributor who is well respected on the team is moving to a new position (internally or externally) and leadership wants to control the messaging.

    In our org, if it were a layoff or PIP initiation, it would be just you, HR, and a leader.
