It seems that Google's promotions come at a slow pace, causing a good amount of frustration and angst. At least part of that seems to be, at first glance, from the promo packet/committee aspect. There seems to be a game/dance that needs to be played/learned. Some things that I've picked up on that lead to better performances/promos: - being friendly and likable towards your peers - having strong communication/writing skills in order to put the packet together and show yourself in a favorable light - being given a "good" project A few questions I have are: - what makes a project "good?" is it the impact in dollars towards the company? - can it be the number of hours it saves other devs? I ask this especially because I'm going into the Cloud CorpEng team. is corpEng fated to have lesser impact through projects than other orgs? - should the project have metrics from before and after completion showing "improvement" of some kind? - what's a good way of carving out a project if one wont be handed to you? - if you ask for a promo-worthy project, will you be given one, or is it not that straightforward? - do you have to compete with others for promotions? (is it a zero sum game?) Can those with experience, either having quickly promo'd themselves or know the system and how to play it, chime in with their knowledge? I think some demystifying would be good for those coming in with the intention of doing good work but not being stuck. (Let's assume the coder isn't planning on gaming the system while doing shitty/undeserving work) And sorry if I'm jumping the gun (if this will be revealed after joining/orientation) but I like doing my homework ahead of time. Cheers and thanks a ton! TC 280k ~7 YOE Incoming L4
It's hard to agree with other comments here. If you don't play the promotion game, you'll soon find yourself falling behind others who play the game. You cannot stay happy forever unless you are truly blind
No one should be worrying about promo before joining

Why do you worry? Keep collecting your fat cat paycheck and be happy. They’ll promote some day. Less you worry about it more happier you’re are. I never ask for promotions and they keep coming, I’m always surprised
I understand, but on the contrary, I’m happier when I’m going after some goal. I wouldn’t be content resting and vesting. Need to know how to go after it though. 🍻
I wonder whether your goal is right. Chasing promotions is a thankless goal. What if you set a goal in terms of accomplishing something in your trade, like building software piece etc.? That is a more rewarding goal since it doesn’t involve waiting. You’re like a sculptor carving out a piece, every second you get closer to the goal, no waiting involved. It’s more satisfying
