Microsoft - Level & Compensation Expectations

Hi, I have got a verbal confirmation from the recruiter and he said they are preparing the offer and would take some time for the same. I applied for SDE2 and I know the level is 62. Its in Redmond, Seattle. With 9 YOE: - I was thinking of SSDE 63/64 ? Is that possible ? - What compensation i should be looking at ? Thanks for your inputs

Levels.fyi is what you’re looking for

Yes I already checked that, are the salary details pretty much up to date ?

That's what it seems like to me by spending time on blind.

If it’s level 62 no chance for 64, small small chance for 63. Good luck

Sure 63 sounds about right. Are these levels based on experience or it’s vague and not properly defined

Both 😂

Have u already tried levels.fyi?

Yes I already checked that but was not sure if the salary details were up to date. And I think the level at which I am hired at will dictate that.

Does the team matter for either of the questions or it’s pretty standard across the board

BYTON cJKu57 Aug 21, 2019

It might matter for second. But so far all feedback I have seen only take into account the level for comp and nothing to do with team. Ur experience and pace of leveling might differ based on team though. All my answers could be totally wrong too.

Sure, my main question is the level itself, I don’t know if they will agree for 63. In the beginning itself I had asked the recruiter if the levels were flexible and they had said yes Any Microsoft people here ? Any in sights

Super lowball for 9 Yoe. Level 60 to 64 are the people who do real coding work and Microsoft underpay a lot on this range. The company is always hiring for this range because people vote with feet and shit hole left to fill. Many companies would see 8 yoe SDE2 as huge red flag. Two data point for reference: friend1 quit PhD after two years, 1 year yoe previously, join as 62. Friend2 stay in bad MSFT group for 7 years and get rejected for FB resume screen since he stays at SDE2 for so long

How does fb know the guy is sde2. What if someone just writes Software Engineer as their title at resume (like fb is flat)

Facebook wzVB27 Aug 22, 2019

Microsoft isn’t flat. 61 62 are sde2. 63 64 are senior title. In my friend case, he put sde2 on resume. FB asks about his title during recruiter screen and hiring manager decide not to move forward. Even with flat, title is different when reaches senior ic5 above or 63 above. FB expect people to grow but they don’t know in some groups of M people are severely under leveled. Good engineer don’t have time to play politics and thus hard to get promotion.

Negotiate hard. Unless you have competing offers its really tough. I had the same experience I am offered level 62 with 11+ YOE. I had to consider it as i dint have any other offers in hand. Good Luck

With today’s hot market, continue looking around. Trust me the SDE 2 role must be from Cosine, Azure IoT or networking group where big exodus happened. Taking lowball and filling shithole won’t make your situation any better. Dumb really believe recruiter shit there is no senior role in a company with a total of 60000 devs of which 100 quit everyday.
