Guys, I'm L62 in Microsoft, and have been here for a good 5 years. I have, for the most part, coasted along the shores of complacency that is Bing - and as such, I feel I'm an engineer with sub-par skills. I have been able to bag a job at Uber for level 4. I hear Uber is very competitive, and I got to thinking, what if I can't perform at the sde2 level at Uber ? So would the kind folks of Blind help me understand how cut throat Uber is? How does the work life balance and engineering talent compare, to an average team in Facebook, Apple, Microsoft and Amazon ? Is Uber given the same treatment as FAANG ? Before you kind folks turn violent, my current TC is 195k (yes, yes, we're Microsoft:( ), and TC at Uber including paper money is around 260k.
I know some people that work at Uber who consistently show up late to evening events because they just left the office (and on several occasions had to leave early to go back to the office). I get the impression they have no real concept of work life balance, although I’ve read publicly that Uber is working on improving that. Let’s assume you’re going to have to work super hard to stay afloat there. Either you fail to do that and are forced to find a new employment option, or you succeed in doing that and ramp up your skills significantly so that you have a lot more leverage for future jobs. Neither scenario is horrible, just keep your eyes open for back up options and give it your all.
Evening events around the SF Bay? 🤣🤣 Good one, buddy. 👍

Just like every big company, it really depends on the team you’re joining. That said, for better or worse, over the past year improving wlb is a top priority for all engineering at uber Honestly, software engineering is not rocket science. As long as you’re willing to learn and improve you’ll do just fine.
