Got multiple offers ... 1 is from MS direct competitor and other with non competitor offering nice TC. Is 2 week notice better than walk out same day with garden leave? What if I walk out same day and later decide to join non competitor? Any red flag to avoid regarding coming back to MS after few years? TC:250k Loc: Washington state
2 weeks notice is better, it is a courtesy for your team and manager. You will work towards wrapping up tasks and transferring knowledge. Even if you get terminated and walked out the same day due to move to competitor - youāll get paid till your intended last day.
+1 on not burning bridges. And donāt walk out with a bad attitude. The industry is smaller than you think.
Stay 2 weeks, and make sure to handoff your work to your colleagues. Unless of course they determine your new gig is a competitor. Then they are having security walk you out and you get 2 weeks paid leave.
I never understood why they would need a security to walk them out if they went over to the competitors? This have never happened to me, and i have even let my employer know i was going over to thier competitors... i am new to Microsoft and i have already noticed how shallow the environment is.. i wonder why..
Fear of stolen assets/IP. Not just Microsoft, my last 2 companies did the same thing.
I put in a 2 week notice and said I was going to work for AWS and they walked me out the next day. I still got paid for the whole 2 weeks though, so I would suggest telling them that you are going to a competitor if you donāt want to work the 2 weeks
was your end date put as the day you walked out or 2 weeks from the day you put the notice? Who controls this?
My manager and skip at Microsoft knew I was leaving soon a month before I left. I even told them I'm going to Google a week before my last day. They said don't hit the official resignation button until your last day. HR only needed a separation certificate signed and didn't ask anything about where I'm going or why I didn't give more notice. Not saying you should be as transparent, but as long as your team is okay, HR doesn't matter.
Sometimes you would need references from previous managers even if you would never want to come back. You don't want to burn that bridge.
If you notify them that you are even CONSIDERING going to a competitor, they won't allow you to work the following two weeks. It's policy. The few people who do end up working the two weeks anyway are avoiding notifying HR. But as soon as HR finds out, you get the boot within 48 hours, following the mandatory paperwork.
It will not burn any Bridges, can confirm from experience.
Tell the truth. Give your 2 weeks and mention you have 2 offers and 1 is with a direct competitor. Odds are, you will be escorted out.
Always give the two weeks notice. This industry is highly interconnected and burning bridges eventually comes back to bite you.
Don't burn down bridges because you never know when you gonna need to cross them again.
This. Just stay for 2 weeks..
Yup, just donāt tell them where youāre going.
