Current TC: 160k (MS) - 63 New TC: 200k (AWS) - L6 Both: Non-SDE roles on the East Coast Has anyone made this change? Enjoyed it? Regretted it? Azure to AWS in Non-Tech/Non-SDE. (Not in Seattle) I have an offer in Sales/professional service Management I’m contemplating currently. They say it’s a “virtual office” but also they assign an office, not sure how that works, would I just go in when I wanted after training? (That’s how the recruiter made it sound). Currently I can work from home entirely if I want or go in, no matter, would be nice to keep that. My main worry is the benefits seem quite a bit worse at AWS and I’ve heard some horror stories of the past but the pay and buffing to the resume much better. Overall AWS culture seems quite a bit improved over a few years ago from what I’ve seen so far and the people I’ve talked to, but I’m unsure. Keep in mind this is non SDE and more sales & professional services / management type role. My current team and role are honestly such a drag I’m so unchallenged and I can basically do nothing every day if I wanted without any issue but find it all so boring, I miss being challenged and having the ability to grow and create. So the fact I hear “You will work hard” at AWS doesn’t seem entirely bad. Though I don’t want to work all weekend and night. The AWS team I’d be joining SEEMED like great people during interviews and really pursued me calling my cell and sending me emails when I was contemplating the offer, the hiring manager left meetings to call me to chat after my written offer was received and has laid out a full plan for on boarding me and a 6-12 month plan to get to the next level. The 20% comp increase on top of not enjoying my current role makes me feel like it’s worth the gamble but I’m interested to hear from those who made the move, especially in AWS non SDE. Thoughts?
200k TC is a lowball for a strong L6. Definitely recommend switching to AWS if you want to give your career a kick into gear (intense work but high impact and vis), but haggle that TC a bit. They might not move it by much, but they will almost certainly play ball.
You'll work hard, but from my relationship with some sales folks at AWS, you'll make bank on top of your TC. Your performance will never be good enough and constant questions to better the return will be a regular feedback. If you're OK with that, sky is the limit. Go get'em!!
What do you risk ? It seems that you don’t enjoy the current position. Trying the new one can be a success, or lead to the newt one. Sounds there is worst place to be in ... I would definitely try it out
Yeah, that’s kind of what I figured. I don’t enjoy my current role though it’s insanely easy and allows me total freedom and work life balance. Making higher TC in a job that I possibly enjoy more sounds great. I’m not sure they’d let me boomerang back to Microsoft if I leave to Amazon and don’t enjoy it even having been a top performer but would be good if that was an option for fallback.
