Microsoft India offer negotiation

Interviews went fine (for Azure) and I have been told that the recruiter will contact me soon.

Does Microsoft ask for current TC before rolling out the offer ? If yes, should I reveal it ? If not, how can I avoid it and will it have a negative effect ? Would really appreciate your inputs folks !

Current numbers: IC4 (~ 11 YOE) with INR 37.5 LPA base, stocks INR 5 L (over four years)

One of the recent L63 salaries in India -

    34 base
6 joining bonus over 2 years
    Perf bonus - 0 to 10 lacs
    Stocks - 70 lacs over 4 years.

This is admittedly very high end in L63 stocks wise from what I know but hopefully this gives a ballpark.

Don't include 15% of perf bonus in TC
      Jul 3
    • Google rafaNadal
Itโ€™s target bonus - why would you not include it?

I agree with not including 30% because that makes no sense. But if you meet expectations then you definitely get 15%

Dude, m also saying don't include 15% (aka include 15% only), read again

      Thatโ€™s super poorly communicated ๐Ÿ˜…

Shouldโ€™ve been - include only 15% of bonus in TC / donโ€™t include the other 15% of bonus in TC

Got the verbal offer folks (was told that official offer will be emailed EOD)

    Level - L63
Base - 40.5 LPA (8% bump over current)
    Stock - 28k USD over 4 years (~ 4.5 LPA)
    Joining bonus - 7 LPA (4+3 over 2 years)
    Performance bonus - 0 - 30 % (going to consider 50% for TC calculation i.e. 6 LPA)
Car (transport) allowance - 2 LPA (never seen anyone mention this on Blind so need to clarify WTH this is and how will it be paid)

    TC ~ 55-57 LPA

My gut feeling is that base could be a wee bit better and RSUs are terrible (kind of expected). What do you think would be practical to negotiate and by how much ? Base/Stocks/Level ? Please chime in and help me close this. Thanks for all your inputs so far !

Got the point reg 40L base. Update: I have the official letter in my inbox, just drafting the email.

Should I also (for the sake for it) include a "why"? As in " I would be comfortable with so and so because of market standards etc etc.".. Asking because I have been super low balled in stocks and going to ask for more than twice. Just want to play safe and not sound too demanding

Thanks for your help so far folks! Recruiter asked for payslips etc. and I submitted them - its wait and watch now. I am curious about the following (assuming L63)

    - what's the average % bump for the base ? 10/15/20 % ?
    - since my current stocks are peanuts, how likely am I to be lowballed on this front ? I see that standard joining stocks are 40-80L (over 4yrs)

37.5 LPA at 11 yoe ๐Ÿ™.Thats the TC for 3-4 yoe in product companies..
You can get atleast 2x of your current TC if your try hard

Agreed.. Thats why I said u can get if you try hard.
If your could clear MS azure interview then u should be able to clear most of other interviews with a bit more efforts

You won't jeopardize anything - worst case they'll stick to their demands.
No HM/recruiter walks away from a candidate who cleared interviews.

63? Or 64? At MS? That will decide your salary, seek level first
    Jul 2 4
    • Absolutely. Ask what level they are offering you. If you get 64 then best. 63 should be okay too but that is the lowest level you should accept.

Take it as ballpark range for TC, 63 gets 50- 70 and 64 gets 70-90

Update: had a call, wasn't great. asked for 45 base and 70k stocks. figured out quickly that base was not going to happen, so stuck to stocks, but found it extremely hard to budge the recruiter. final call was that recruiter will try to (no promise!) revise stocks.

Reg 'car allowance' (mystery component) - I double checked and recruiter confirmed that it was in addition to the base (i.e. base + stocks + perf bonus + joining bonus + car allowance). it has nothing to do with "car lease" either (this is stated separately in the offer and is useless anyway). thats the only positive I guess but still did not make sense to me - maybe they did not include it in base since they will have to consider it for pay revisions, PF etc. going forward. that's the only reason I can think of - happy to hear your thoughts.

Thanks to you folks, I did realise that the base was 'fine' to begin with, so it din't pinch me. But I was shocked to see the heights of low-balling w.r.t stocks!

      OP
I got the "final" confirmation - offer will remain the same, so nothing on the stocks as well :(

So that's it right ? Or do you folks have any tips/tricks ? can I reach out to the hiring manager (I am on good terms) considering stocks are so bad! Or am I being too greedy, have the wrong info (stocks should be at least 50k) or this might be too risky ? I only have time until tomorrow (offer expires as per email/recruiter) - appreciate your help!

    • Microsoft its_all_relative
i don't think hiring manager has a lot of say in offers, that being said its not bad offer, you can aim for L64 promotion in 1.5-2yrs and ask for bigger stock reward at that time.
if i were you, i will accept offer and ask for 45days join instead of 30days and try to get better offer from Amazon, salesforce, ...., after that go for best one else no problem joining MSFT
you were at disadvantage from beginning due to lack of competing offers now you have one, you use it to show to other companies

You didn't include PF and gratuity in TC, negotiate on stocks, base is good, getting to 64 will take time, negotiate right away, thats the purpose of draft offer. Car lease is myth and trap. These are benefits not TC, don't count alot on joining bonus, that will vanish after 2 years and you may find in hand salary has not increased. Good luck, keep posting

Yes recruiter will ask for TC, infact last payslips. There is no negative effect because they've got fixed pay bands by levels. It all depends on level you get. You can get TC around 50-55L (+/- 7-8L), all depends on level ultimately.

You can get more than this. Keep in mind. Microsoft has a very good variable pay which very few companies pay. E.g you could get 0-30k usd stock per year depending upon performance. Also bonus 0-30% of your base. This is for 63 and 64 level. So, I think you should get what you may be looking more or less.
