Microsoft L61 to Google L3

I am at Microsoft Level 61. Google is offering me L3. New grads also get L3 at Google, I feel my 4 years of experience doesn’t mean much. Should I join it or decline? Would it be a step down in career?

L3 is really low. It may be better to interview again in 6 months. Check

Well hate to break it to you, usually a Microsoft L61 doesn't stack up to an L4 at Google or L5 at Amazon. Promotions at Microsoft are easier and the quality of work isn't that great at Microsoft. I had a similar situation like you where I reached L61 in 2 years at Microsoft but only got L3 at Google. But if you are good, you should be able to make L4 in a year.

Hard to generalize. I was L61 at Microsoft and got L5 at Google.

@Google you might be an outlier. For most people it is hard to swing that. Also leveling at AMZN/GOOG is tricky as it depends on how you interview vs. pure years of experience

I've known people with 10 years of experience who got L3. It's pretty standard for anything less than 5 years. If you are at an L4 level you should be able to get promoted in a year.

^^ Someone has to be really dumb to accept a L3 offer after working at any half decent Company for 10 years. I haven’t seen even 1 such occurrence.
