I got a call on Wed, and they told me that I was accepted. They asked what would I expect for compensation and since I wasn't used to the usual "compensation negotiation dance", I did give them numbers instead of saying that I don't know. I said, I would be wow'ed by: 130k base 25k sign 80k stock I thought keeping stock low would make them more willing to give 130k base and later I can negotiate stock. As I reading more and more into other people's offers. I feel like I may have "normal" balled myself instead of high balling. How should I proceed? I have 2 yoe and I believe I did extremely well on onsite interview. Is it possible that they'd go beyond my numbers in the initial written offer?
Don’t worry. Stay there 18-24 months then leave for a better job elsewhere. Return later in a higher level position. In the long term it won’t matter much.
This response is quite literally the exact thing that every one at Microsoft does. I was there long enough to know you ain't gonna promote. And if you do it's not going to be that great of a pay increase.
Is it hard to get promoted at MS? I have heard that the small pay increases are true, but I heard promotions (granted you’re not getting a straight SWE 2 -> Senior promotion for example) come by relatively quickly
That's too high for 2 yoe already so don't worry
Off topic but what's your current base at factset?
Shouldn't have given such specific numbers. And don't listen to ppl saying it's high for 2 yoe. Market keeps changing and so does offers. I was told the same but I got better than what I was told I will get.
Yeah I shouldn't have. I hope they'll ignore what I said, should I email the person I talked on the phone with and tell that I actually don't know what to expect and I didn't know what I was talking about?
In the next round of talks, you can let the recruiter know subtly that you did some more research and found that blah blah is actually more closer to your skillset, experience. However keep in mind, without competing offers, they might not be ready to negotiate.
If that truly is what would wow you, then accept it! Don’t compare yourself against other people, if you want this job.
Def low for 2 yoe, they have you a grad salary
That's definitely not grad salary, it's around 20k higher (assuming at Redmond)
Hr already knows
What's the location? If it's Bay Area it's probably a bit low.
Depends on the level. Which level are you getting in at?
no
