I’m curious what employees at both of these companies think of this move? https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-06-03/microsoft-is-said-to-have-agreed-to-acquire-coding-site-github
Wow. Big play by MSFT
Makes a lot of sense for Microsoft, the push towards open source has been gaining steady momentum since Satya became CEO. We've also moved all our open source projects to github when codeplex was killed, and there's some huge internal projects extending the scalability of git to support repositories such as office and windows. Love it! Also there's been good integration between github and vsts for a while now. Direct competitors will absolutely move their private repos, but I don't see the same happening for their open source projects anytime soon given the popularity of github. Having said that, I've got no idea what the future looks like for github... I hope it will keep existing as an independent entity. Please don't add LinkedIn profiles on github pages.
Microsoft is the developer company. Of course we're going to do whatever it takes to stay that way.
Good purchase for msft. Buy the biggest competitor to vsts and we might actually make it profitable
Microsoft really does do developer tools well. If they keep the “DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS” mantra in mind, this could work well. From people I knew inside github it sounded like it had some pretty toxic cultural issues that could be improved too.
How much money will each GitHub employee get on average?
I think they can do more with github for enterprise
This is surprising coming from Microsoft. I’ll pay attention to them in the future.
From a business perspective, I think this makes a lot of sense, but I doubt the public is fully privy to all the details and reasons. I'm excited (and nervous), we'll have to see how things play out.

Google CFO confirms "large-scale" layoffs today (Apr 17)
If they give it the LinkedIn treatment i.e. leave it alone it'll be fine, but I can't imagine companies like Amazon will continue to have code there.
Amazon has an internal repo. Anything on GitHub is available to anyone. The non open source stuff isn’t there
I thought companies like Amazon have their own github enterprise
