Hi, I am Principal software engineer at current job. Got offer from Microsoft but they level me down to senior software engineer (level 64) I interviewed for Principal software engineer at Microsoft. Thoughts ? Can I negotiate on title ? 10YOE
I have 3 yoe and MS offered me L60 with TC that’s almost half of my current TC. Is it pretty common for MS to do this?
Just tell them that you make 2x as much already and will need them to re-level you and come in higher. If they demand proof, just show them your current comp.
Good teams pay competitely. What org in msft did u interview with?
Can you share details of your offer?
No you cant negotiate on title and you probably dont want to. At 64 you're competing with other 64s and 63s. At 65 (principal) you're competing with 66s and 67s including managers. So at 65 you potentially have to have the same impact as so.eone sho runs a 100+ person org.
10 yoe - Senior is fine . Being principal at Ca is not equal to Microsoft principal - Microsoft principal is a much larger role than “principal” as a term - some companies give principals liberally
Thanks for info, how many YOE require for PSE level ? What percentage of Microsoft employee are PSE ?
Check http://levels.fyi, each level should have crowdsourced YoE
Ms down levels industry hires unless you are from fang. Apparently work done by engineers outside of fang is not as valuable as those from fang.
I was kind of offended by the L60 offer when I have 3 yoe and make twice as much at Apple :(
You were making 250k at Apple? Sounds like bollocking.
How many years are you in current role at CA? I would say it would map to lvl 63 in most teams. 64 in some liberal teams. I worked in CA before. With given Broadcom acquisition, I would say you got the best offer. You should target to find success in lvl 64.
I’ll suggest, if you think you interviews well, push for principal position.. getting promo after coming in harder, it will take u at least 2 years to get to Principal.. negotiate level.. don’t settle on 64 unless you are desperate to get out of CA..
Thanks
What does the comp increase look like?
10% increase in base but got RSU
It’s probably a good deal for you then. Sounds like your title doesn’t equate to the same title at MSFT. Its definitely harder to come in as principle, especially if your current comp is just 10% below their offer. I’d fight for more and aim for principal, but it may be worth settling at 15% more.
