What does a typical promo bump look like at Microsoft? If I joined as L63, what might a 63->64 look like? Or 64-> principal? Trying to determine when I want to move. Wait for Senior at Amazon (1.5 years away), work as senior for a few years, then see if I can transfer as principal, or go now. Hoping to join 63 @250+ if I joined now. TC 180, 6yoe Edit: Seattle area
I guess I could always boomerang if Principal at Microsoft ends up being lower pay. Not sure if people can leave as L5, and come back as L6 a few years later, though.
You are not going to get Principal with 6 yoe. Principal band most are engineering managers with like $300-350 TC
Ah, I didn't explain clearly. I meant if I got promoted to Principal at Microsoft after coming in at Senior and the money wasn't as good, I might be able to boomerang back. Although, I don't know if Principal is even realistic. Principal at Amazon is essentially unreachable for most. But levels shows that MS Principal is around experienced Senior at Amazon, so maybe it's a bit more realistic at Microsoft? So there are no IC Principals?
Getting to Principal at MSFT is easier these days (as compared to 7-8 years ago)
We are hiring principals with less than 5 years experience off the street. They then get trained by senior level and below teammates. Great for moral.
