SDE 2 don’t crack 170k
Just curious what the range will be for sde 2 at microsoft with someone of 10 year experience. Im currently sde 2 at Amazon and my tc is 235k. I plan to switch to Microsoft as i have been here 4 years.
- Here's an offer i saw recently to someone from a fang company. L62, Redmond, 148/180/60. 10% bonus target/11k stock target. That gives you about 235 TC over the 4 years (not incl raises or promos). That doesnt mean that's what every 62 at ms gets, but they will match (or possibly exceed) your current comp if they want you.
It's unlikely they will hire you at >= l63 as an sde 2 from Amazon. Expectations are different from sde 2 to sr.

So i believe as a sde 2 from amazon, ill be translated directly to a l61-62 at msft but the py at in this level varies based on candidate prior experience and what he currently makes. Just curious why wouldnt u consider sde 2 from amazon for a level 63? A sde 2 from Amazon would be a very capable candidate as compared to others.
- Because it's a different role. I expect 63+ to be able to contribute beyond the code they write and even beyond the designs they contribute. Mentorship, driving initiatives across groups and things like that become much more important. That said, there are limited cases where if I was hiring a position that required very specific knowledge I might hire at a higher level in that case. In general, it's a dangerous thing to do because internal folks at 63+ deliver a lot of impact . You dont want to hire someone at a higher level and then have to ding them at review time.
