For all who moved from Microsoft to Amazon, what should one expect to lose in Microsoft - benefits wise and gain in Amazon? How does Amazon's 401k, HSA, paternity leave, other leaves, higher education reimbursement and other some benefits compare to Microsoft's?
Loose: a lot of free time Gain: love for š
Donāt forget shitty coffee
Take 15000 - 20000 away from your offer, and time in your life for commute.
You might have to climb a couple of floors to pee
Think Microsoft beats Amazon everywhere
Not in Cloud services
Benefits wise tho, all benefits are worse at amazon.
I have heard the same thing the work culture at amazon is always on and working ; just wondering if that is sustainable model long term for amazon and wondering what percent of the staff leave due to burn out
The most senior developer in most teams would not have spent more than 2-3 years in the company
Does Amazon even flinch anymore when someone gives ther notice after 2 years?
Yes, they ask "what took you so long?"
Itās so bad here they pay bonuses at Microsoft to keep people coming. š§
Amazon benefits suck, you donāt even get Prime membership as a benefit. Your 401K match is worse and they only give you 2% amazon stock fund not cash match that you can then invest in whatever way. Say goodbye to stay fit benefits, company store discounts, Passport etc. Stock vesting is garbage at 5,15,40,40%. They use the word frugal but all it means is cheap. They will look at hiring stocks as well when itās time to reward you or give you a raise to compute total comp and you can end up with a 3% increase over base pay and no new stock for 2 years and zero bonus if stock has gone up. Your Premera HSA plan is worse. I had 22+12 days off per year at MS, here you get 10+5 your first year and 15+5 your next year onwards. You have to pay for parking in your building. Also there are absolutely no enterprise level product management tools, no product studio and no TFS, itās the Wild West and people manage roadmaps and projects in the equivalent of google docs. I learned about a new domain pretty fast because things move faster than Windows but otherwise I regret leaving MS for Amazon as a TPM.
How's the tooling at Msft vs Amzn?
This is the right assessment of the situation. Well summed up.
