Microsoft vs Amazon. better?

Microsoft GOD!
Sep 30, 2018 28 Comments

My friend has new grad offers from both and he asked me for my opinion.
I told him msft after looking at people in similar situations. But I think I have been biased.

TC at msft will be better if he leverages Amazon offer, which he hasn't done yet.
Amazon tc can't be negotiated.

Objectively, on an average =>

Which one is considered more prestigious?
Which one looks better on your resume.
Which one is better for career?

PS :- I know it's highly dependent on the team; hence on an average.

MS wins on WLB. Amazon for interesting work, on average. Comp often better at Amazon but not always. Both look good on resume, but when I see somebody who thrived at Amazon (survived 2+ years, at least one promo) I think "this guy fucks". Just getting hired at Amazon is not a strong signal unless it was for L6+. Obviously, beyond that, highly team dependent.

I think promos at Amazon are ez. I see Soo many SDE 2 for a 1.5 yoe; . This I am not factually sure. Just anecdotally

For Facebook, isn't it up or out to E4 in two years? By your reasoning, promotions at Facebook are also easy?

I’d choose whatever project sounds more exciting. In both positions, as a 59 or L4, you’ll be told what to work on and it will be your job to learn and execute. If this is for an SDE gig, you will likely have more autonomy earlier at Amazon which can be a good or a bad thing depending on the person. If you’re good at what you do, Amazon will likely let you run faster and make a greater impact than at MSFT at a lower level. But again, this can be org dependent.

MSFT (excluding Azure) is generally “easier” and safer. But who wants easy and safe out of college?

Been at both. If you rock, Amazon pays way higher than MS, but that means much worse wlb at Amazon.
If s/he is planning to have family/kids soon, then absolutely MS.
Also by going to MS, s/he'll have enough time to leetcode and get prepared for Fb/G.

Amazon is more prestigious. And looks better in your resume. And will be more likely to get you jobs elsewhere in growing your career.

Microsoft isn’t as bad these days but it just has nothing really going for it. It’s much easier though.

Amazon for new grads. You go to msft when you are old and tired and is ok with having lower TC because you saved a lot at FANG

There is a lot of variability in upward mobility and wlb at ms by group. That said, amazon is very well known for its dog eat dog culture where a certain percent of people every year are put on perf improvement plans or fired. This obviously impacts the work environment.

In general, ms new grad offers are better than Amazon. Not 100% consistent though.

Its relatively easy to get promoted at both up to a point, but at a certain point, it's easier to get continuously more responsibility and hence promos at ms.

As far as looking better on your resume they are both respected companies but in general that doesnt do much other than get your resume looked at.

That said, it's all heavily dependent on individual offers and teams. If we know those details you will get more specific advice.

Worth mentioning. I was a university hire at Microsoft in the worst org that moves incredibly slow(in terms of comp & work). In 3 months was able to make an internal transfer to a different org to one of the most sought after teams. Not sure if internal mobility is the same at Amazon, but as an early in career at Microsoft me and my friends found it incredibly easy to move from the some of the worst teams in the company to some of the best. In addition this was made possible by Microsoft company events tailored towards getting you exposure and interviews with teams across the company even in your first 6 months. Hope this provides some insight into the whole average team thing.

Which team you are referring to as best teams? I might join Microsoft, hence it would be great to get some advice on teams I should look for

I used to associate Microsoft with wlb. But I am yet to find that in Azure. I enjoy the grind but that also means that no one should make generalizations. It’s misleading.

For new grads, Amazon. Just because you learn to grind which is pretty important to learn early in your career.

Which team matters. Both companies on resume are fine. Obviously if the person cares wlb and likes east side better, Microsoft. If wants to get married, stay in Seattle. The east side only has families, not much dating going on.

Amazon can always be negotiated. I know people who have had their tc close to doubled when they showed a good competing offer from a comparable company.

If your friend is young and the offer is from aws, Amazon might be worth it - with the work comes experience that a LOT of companies love hiring.

I’m in similar situation but I already accepted ms offer 2 days back. Team is not decided yet but amazon is giving an offer for Alexa voice & skills team.
Is it okay to reject ms offer as a new grad?

I don’t think it really matters. Does he want to be in Seattle or in Redmond/Bellevue? Does he have any idea what team he’ll be on at either? That makes a huge difference. In terms of prestige, working at one will likely clear resume filters for any faang and probably unicorn (maybe I don’t really know)
