I'm considering offers from Microsoft L61 / Azure SQL / Redmond and Databricks L3 / Runtime / SF. Both offers are comparable in terms of cash compensation. What is the growth prospect for someone interested in databases? How is the engineering and team culture at Databricks? Is it easy to blend in if you are not from Berkeley or Stanford? I'm also not sure how to value the RSU's from Databricks. Any pointers on the current value of RSU's, valuation of the company, stock dilution over time and IPO timeline would be really helpful.
TC or GTFO
Databricks is comprised of geniuses. Forget the TC at this early in the career, the learning opportunity is too great.
Curious - would you take Databricks over Stripe as a new grad? Stripe TC is much higher and they’re known for having a good engineering culture
That’s a tough one. I have the impressions that people at Stripe are pretty smart too. I feel with OPs interests, Databricks is a better fit. I guess saying “forget TC” is a little bit of an overstatement, but since it was Microsoft and Databricks in question I figured it can’t be that far apart.
If you are interested in working on the database side definitely come here. Company is doing very well at the moment, I can't pretend to have any meaningful inside knowledge on what current valuation is, but likely well above the ~$21 that the last fundraise/tender offer was at.
Databricks for rapid growth of yourself and the company. Microsoft for slow but steady growth of both, especially on Azure SQL team (aka cash cow/golden goose). TC should be higher for SF than MS in Redmond fwiw...
If you got on the Runtime team and not universe then yeah if not probably not as cool or interesting
To clarify Runtime - Databricks Custom Spark Engine Universe - Everything else, all facets related to a SaaS and honestly most SaaS companies you would have similar work, not knocking but just stating the difference
You'll be one among 50k engineers at Microsoft, one among 150ish at Databricks. Unless there is a very significant pay gap, go with Databricks.
