Microsoft vs Google Kirkland?

Pacific Northwest National Labor Marth

A bit torn between the two right now. Front end engineer, got offers from both of these and Amazon (which I'm not as interested in).

On the one hand Google is Google, but Microsoft lately has been on a tear culture wise/etc and I'd be able to use a lot of open source stuff there for web development. Granted learning how the internal frameworks etc work at Google would be pretty awesome as well.

Curious what others opinions are on satellite office Google vs Microsoft main campus. Assuming compensation is the same (MSFT is telling me it can match)

You can always go to Microsoft. Google on the resume opens door for almost anything else in the future.

Come to Microsoft. I want to work at Google and one less working there makes an easier road for me.

Just an observation: M->G flow is much higher than G->M.

Microsoft has substantially more employees, so that'll seem the case independent of other factors.

🤔 someone needs to dump hr databases and compare the numbers. normalized by the size, of course.

Microsoft still full of politics. I'd pick G right away.

That’s one of the reasons I wouldn’t use to pick Google over Microsoft. They’re not too different in this regard.

Yeah I've heard both sides on this one. I really like where Microsoft is headed lately culture wise. But I don't know if it's where I'd want to be yet

Google Kirkland is full of exMSFT folks. Trust me, the difference is negligible.

You are always better off at the main campus if you are driven to succeed and will be able to network and pick right projects

Yeah that's one of the things I'm a bit worried about. However they are expanding their office here and I'll probably end up moving in 3 years so not as big a deal as it would be long term. Appreciate the note though

Really appreciate all the replies. Sounds like most are thinking what I've been leaning towards (Google is much more worth it even with satellite office)

An exec/director position at MS HQ with career prospectives would generally be better than a job at google Kirkland. For engineering roles L5 and below - Google is a better choice and gives better experience and eng skills. It will be easier to get to a principal role at ms.
