Millennial time waster coworker - help

This person makes millennials look normal. Side shaved head, wears jeans when we're supposed to be buttoned down, one of those skater chains, same red n black plaid jacket shirt thing, plugs in his ears. And he is constantly on IG 90% of the work day. It annoys me beyond belief. Like he gets paid here but I swear to everything he is trying to find every bug on IG. The way our cubbies are positioned is my back is to him and I've taken like 2 selfies (lol) with him in the background and you can zoom in and see IG posts. That part is hilarious. But it's so super annoying because either I feel I want to slack off that much and get paid. Or I just find his work ethic insulting. It feels good to rant. I've told his PM in round about ways. But you'd think his KPI would show something. Oh wait we don't have KPI for employees. 🤬

Here is an advice. If you are not his manager then don't bother about it. I had a similar situation where a Chinese coworker was on phone most of the time doing real estate business. I tried to coach him but it only ruined my relationship with him because he felt that it's OK for him to do real estate if his tasks are done. Later I found out that my manager hated me more because of something I said. Both of them ganged up against me.

I also found out that the real estate guy was a referral candidate of a top VP. And very well connected in the org while I was not.

So the moral of this story is that you speak when you have authority. Morals without authority mean shit.

Even if i did something terribly wrong, i wouldn’t want to be coached by same level colleague...

Really? So you’d just want to be doing it wrong over and over again? I think having coworkers that care enough to give you constructive feedback is a pretty great thing to have and generally benefits everyone involved. Only reason I can see why you wouldn’t like that is ego.

Yes, i wouldn’t want constructive criticism from a same level colleague, if “constructive criticism” is being told i should stop watching youtube videos. If i’m getting my work done, it doesn’t matter how i’m getting it done. Even if i’m doing something terribly wrong, i’d want direction from my manager or from a member of my team. I don’t get why people can’t mind their own business. It’s really not a great idea to lecture someone that’s not your direct subordinate... if i’m dressing provocatively and it may get me in trouble, sure i’d like a hint that i’m getting stares from management, but telling me how to spend my workday? No thanks

Maybe if i’m writing my code really inefficiently and it’s taking up too much of my time, i’d love my coworker to teach me the efficient way though. But not about what i do during my work hours when i’m getting my work done on time.

I've only sent them to close friends via SMS who I worked with. I'd imagine there's some kind of rediculous law about photoing someone without their consent.

He has a co-worker that is a human computer that picks up 95% of the work on their projects. And we can all see each other's progress in Gantt charts. But it's team based not individual

Well then if his coworker is not complaining why should you? The company will eventually want to make a profit out of him, and the only way to do that is if the rest of his coworkers do extra work to cover his slackness, so it's eventually on them. Don't go all Frank Grimes on the guy, you know how that ended...

It is his manager's problem not yours. Even the dressing is. If his dressing is objectionable, report to HR about it. If his lethargy demotivated you, you can talk to your manager on the effect he is having on you... May be a different cubicle would restore your peace of mind.

I know the feeling. I had to mentor a fresh grad who was on his phone constantly.... Even When shadowing me while debugging or monitoring some thing. I simply rejected to train him after a couple of weeks. I opened cnn and continued talking a if we were still looking at the logs.. Eventually after 5 minutes he took his head out of phone and looked at the screen and me.... He laughed it off as of it was a joke.
That was the last time I helped him

Are you in a position to direct him in any way?

Maybe instead of ranting about it you can get off your petty ass and do something about it. Talk to him, dump some work on him(watch him sink or swim), chat with his manager, drop a hint to HR, find a new job. There are many ways you can work to solve this yourself.

Maybe this is your chance to prove how much of a leader you can be.

Oh I'm fully aware it's petty and I'm ok with it. I'm not his manager. In different internal departments so I can't even offload work to him.

Also. Do not wish to be a leader. I'm tech and want to stay tech.

  • Surprising to see so many defending the lazy guy.

Unless he’s secretly a 10x engineer (which you would know), these types have an uncanny ability to tear teams apart from the inside. His teammates will eventually find out, feel slighted by the dynamic, resent their manager for doing nothing and question their compensation given the misbalance in workload, and eventually leave.

    Continue to raise your hand.

This post has so many stereotypes that it’s hard to believe it’s true. Anyway I’ll play along.

    1. OP isn’t millennial’s manager, right? So it’s not OP’s job to track performance and activity. It also means that OP doesn’t have full visibility of millennial’s achievements
    2. If you are “supposed to be buttoned down” why dress code isn’t enforced for millennial? Maybe there’s no strict dress code and it’s just OP’s impression that it should be enforced?

It's just that you are insecure about a millennial not working his ass off like you do. It isn't any of your business - as long as he isn't STOPPING you from YOUR work.

Millennials feel entitled sometimes, however I wouldn't bother much about him.
