Mixed marriages

Jul 6 59 Comments

Every other ad on TV now shows a mixed marriage or families with different races. The truth is, we as a country are nowhere that mixed. What is the agenda of advertising agencies?

White Guy and Asian girl is common but not the other way around. I wonder why

    • OP
Kind of like Hollywood, the black guy always dies first.

That’s easy. The media has portrayed Asian men as weak and effeminate and made them out to be highly unattractive to women of all races.

It’s more than smalltoys , there is lot of superiority and inferiority complex going on with each other .

That impressive, so one in six marriages is bi-racial?
      Jul 6
    • OP
Not impressive if they are counting Hispanics are part of biracial. Hispanics are white looking in many cases.

If you keep aside white hispanics and Asian girls, I think it’ll be rare.

I bet if you take out black, native Americans, and Pacific Islanders, it would be even more rare.

I have lived in NYC 40 years, mixed marriages are still uncommon here. Especially white and black. Interestingly a lot of Jewish people work in advertising but they hardly marry blacks.
But on a final note, in America the most important color is green.

@OP you’re not imagining things. Most “mixed” couples on ads are now black man, white women. The media successfully portrayed Asian men as weak and effeminate and lots of Asian women ended up with white men. Now it’s the white mans turned to be demonized because it’s in fashion to attack straight white men. The propaganda is EVERYWHERE. Just like pushing gay couples in the media. They represent a couple of percentage points but the way the media portrays it, you’d think it’s half the population. Also in reality most of the whites women with black guys are maybe a 1 or 2 at best and it’s either a black guy that likes white land whales or she becomes a lesbian. Very rarely do you see a really attractive white woman with a black guy. It might happen but it’s the exception more than the rule. Usually it’s white trailer trash with the black guys, typically driving an old Pontiac Grand Am, but of course that’s not how the media portrays it.

There's no rule that says the frequency of something happening on ads has to be tied to the frequency of it happening in society. Also interracial couples are both normal and acceptable... no?

I find it ironic that as we try and move beyond race, we now have advertisers hyperanalyzing which race to make every character in their ads.

You’re seriously asking what the agenda is of ad agencies? Their job is to literally sell products. Businesses literally exist to sell products. Neither care about the cause. They want to line their pockets. Watch how quickly Pride goes away now that June is over.
    Jul 6 2
    • OP
True. But the message is clear, we approve of mixed marriage, we approve of same sex partners, we care deeply about these issues, when in reality they are just selling shampoo. IMHO a risky move.

If only. Pride was waaaay too long and over the top this year and is spilling into July. Several gay friends admitted the corporation of Pride was over the top.

After the ad is over, I ask myself what was the ad for? Too much distractions, too much over engineering with people and not enough focus on the product.

True..ds s d new era of marketing...by showing that they are inclusive they make ppl feel that they are part of the brand too..and thus gain more customers...

Race as a filter for human pairing is ridiculous. Why do you care fir race in ads?
    Jul 6 4
    • Akamai Technologies VmQQ44
I think people care only if it’s forced propaganda that’s obviously trying to normal something or present it as the norm when it’s not. It just feels forced which people pickup on.

I agree it's normal to not care about race. So why are ad companies hyperanalyzing race and finding the perfect race pair to sell a certain product? If they didn't care, representation would be roughly the same as reality

One interesting thing I've noticed in quite a few movies these days is that it's pretty common for them to depict a white/nonblack man and black woman couple. In real life I think that's one of the rarest racial pairs out there.
