Money or EB1?

I’m a PM at MSFT making 170K a year.

Got offered a PM role in Google with TC close to 300K.

Also got some calls from MSFT teams in Canada which could lead me to a EB1 in 3-4 years.

Ps: am an Indian stuck in green card backlog for last 11 years.

What’s your call dear Blinders?

Also from my experience the golden rule in your life is never spend time waiting for something to happen. Fuck that GC stuff and fuck the American immigration system. Do whatever is actually important to your career. But if you have a family you might just ignore what I said

Google. Don’t play multi level chess with this. So many things can go wrong with your EB1 plan.

Noob question. How would Canada lead to EB1 in 3-4 years?
    Feb 6, 20181
    • He could get transferred back to the US on an L1A after a year and then apply for the GC

Google might also let you relocate to a different country and you can replay the EB1 bet once you establish. Worst case, google India one year and back???

Vancouver sucks. Imagine Seattle but worse in every way (except Chinese food). Take the Google $$$ - you can always go to Canada, they have merit based immigration. Be educated and skilled (seems like you are) and you'll get a green card upon arrival.

Disagree 100% with the Vancouver sucks part. Vancouver > Seattle.

Ok agree to disagree. Many people live in Vancouver and enjoy it (I personally enjoy the East Coast much more). But you gotta both agree Canada is much easier to move to as a backup for people in tech with their merit based immigration.

Absolutely it is much easier. Hence why I think for most people coming to the US, they should strongly consider Canada as well.

Join Google. If required, you can easily move within Google to any of their several international offices (after 1-2 years would be better). This gives you everything 1) Career at Google 2) Money and 3) EB1 ..... Most of your compensation should be stocks/RSU and these won't change when you move within Google (only base and bonus are adjusted, so this explains the money part) . You already know the career and EB1 part . Wish you the best.

It’s not worth waiting for GC. Go where your career prospects are best. Also, it’s very possible there will be immigration reform that might get rid of the multinational manager eb1 since it’s abused way too much (in addition to a bunch of other stuff).

Someone needs to start a petition about this exact issue. Trump has no clue this bullshit is going on.

It's obvious that not many of the people answering are aware of the EB2/3 mess - here are your two best options ::

1- Tell Google about your immigration situation ; thank them for the offer but tell them that you need to be away from US for a year+ to get into a comfortable situation. If required wait for a role to be vacant in Kitchener/Canada or Zurich etc.

2- Go to MS Canada. Do let it be known that if you do have an affinity towards US but want to explore Canada ; this will help you to return in 1-2 years. You will get EAD 6 months after returning , GC a year after

This ^^ EB1C is massively abused by the same crowd screwing over H1B and USCIS is aware.
Don't expect the same smooth ride down that path in a couple years.
Get the job at google, be awesome, get a proper EB1A, bonus: don't leave the country.

if u r 100% sure about GC go for that without thinking. google offer u can get after 4 years as well. 170 to 300 k jump is not gonna fetch u million $ in next 3-4 years

Wont the proposal for merit based immigration help get you GC faster? You might want to wait and see the outcome and then take a decision

Do you like the role at Google? Then take it. It is very easy to apply for merit based citizenship in Canada — you can apply for it yourself. Once you have Canadian PR, things are a lot easier. All the best.

Closing with: go with your gut; you probably already know what you want to do!!

My advice would be pick where you want to be. No sense waiting longer for GC here in the US if you’d rather live elsewhere. If you really want to live here, then taking $$$ at Google is a no-brainer. If being in Vancouver and remaining at Microsoft sounds more appealing, then you might as well go there. Only you can make that call. It sounds though like Canada would be a pit stop as you really want to come back here so why bother going up there only to move back?
