Do you think more regulation on data handling will actually matter?
Yes. Personal responsibility is not a good way to protect people against the actions of others. Take the facebook example. CA only had 53 people use their app in Australia and yet they got 310,000 user accounts. How would personal responsibility have helps those thousands of people?
Yes it starts with People willing to share so much data with a company that runs on selling that data directly or indirectly. If Facebook can influence our elections that also means how well educated electorate we have. Today it’s Facebook, tomorrow it’s Netflix recommending shows based on your political leanings to influence your decision on voting. Should we proactively regulate what Netflix is allowed to do with their recommendation algorithms? Where does this stop?
Let’s solve one problem first then worry about how slippery a slope is second.
Like with most things I think there needs to be a balance companies should better regulate data to prevent extreme cases but ultimately we want to make sure people are making educated decisions. Kind of like we did with tobacco.
As long as Facebook is helping Republicans, we can increase regulation on just about everything associated.

No. How much babysitting/baby proofing we expect from laws? I like personal responsibility and individual education as better course of action rather than regulations. When you regulate every aspect of life, the amount of freedom ends up being smaller by the day. Also think about cost of enforcing regulations and who ends up paying for it? FDA didn’t stop addictive pain medication, or FCC doesn’t stop monopoly of your ISP, it just ends up being a leverage in the hands of politicians to play crony capitalism.
