I have worked with service companies in early 8 years of my career before i joined MSFT, Amazon and now LinkedIn. I am getting paid well but i have total 17 years of experience and i see people above me are equal or less in age and experience or people way younger to me are making equal to me. That sometimes demotivates me. I just curse myself how come i wasted my time and career with service companies early in career. Is there a way to recover now or should i just accept the fact that i fucke d up initially (mostly because lack of exposure) and stop thinking about it Whats your suggestion ?
Can't change the past. It's hard, but no reason to let it affect the future. You're better off than if you'd stuck around with those service companies & that's all that should matter.
Compare with me. 18 yoe and Tc 160k
Do not think that at all. You have something they don’t have yet. LIFE experience.
Thanks guys!
There is a joke that sort of goes like this: my son is already 3 but he hasn't started learning Tensorflow, is he screwed? It's OK to learn about how your peers are doing, but what works best is to compare with and improve yourself steadily instead. Life is long, trust me after 50 years you won't care about how you were not doing as well in your 30s as someone who was in their 20s. But you will regret about some things that you didn't do or work hard enough towards. Long life also makes this a long race, treat it as a marathon not a sprint. At the end it's actually a good thing that you care about how your peers are doing, better than being oblivious about it.
Your service experience will help you in the future. Don’t worry about it and appreciate the less conventional path you have taken. And, save your money while you are young and plan to become financially independent as soon as you can manage it. It will give you more options when you are older.
I have 13 yoe with CS background. I was always in sub-standard teams for almost 11 years and then I took a plunge and left it right there and last 2 years I am moving around Core Engineering teams and getting good learning. As everyone said, it's all begin with us so keep rolling :-)
I am not sure why are you still concerned with your salary and designation after working for this long, you have better things like taking care of family, pursing a hobby etc rather than worrying about professional life. Try to meditate to be in peace with your inner self
I had similar thoughts a few years ago. After a few more hair turning grey, this is what I think about it. Can you change it? If yes, what can you do to change it? Chart a plan, execute. If no, why worry?

You should stop thinking about it and comparing yourself with others. Everyone’s path is different and pretty sure there would be others who would look at you and curse themselves. If you had moved early, you’d probably be cribbing about how you didn’t make it to a higher position by now, or whatever. At the end of the day, you are doing the best you can for yourself. Inner peace, my friend, inner peace.
