Never negotiated salary before. Should I give them a range or see what they offer and negotiate after ? What's the expected salary range for software developer in NYC. 7+ years of experience; Front office development. TC - 145k
Don’t give them any number. Tell them you are expecting competitive offer.
Don't give range. Give your max of the range only
Overshoot like crazy. I got jipped by GS, and I didn't overshoot by enough (requested less than the standard offer for the next level up, there's some chance I could've gotten it since I've seen it happen). I'd use FANG numbers for L5 as a benchmark since you're at 7 yoe.
“competitive”
How do I know if I'm asking too much though. Shouldn't I be realistic. Is 170k base too much. Recruiter says that they start VP at 150k, so associate would get lower than that.
170k is standard base for Bay Area with ~10 yoe. Too bad their VP is fucked by making ~150k
VP at many traditional organizations is very much in-name-only, and sometimes indicates tenure more than anything, so I wouldn't sweat the VP base -- no doubt there is a good deal of overlap with the associate range as well.
There's no such things as asking for too much! Trust me you will only regret when ask for too little
Okay then, I'm going to try asking for 170k plus bonus plus joining bonus.. Lets see how it goes.
Just spoke to the recruiter and they say they won't pay bonus for this year since it will be by October. Is this correct?

I haven’t done shit today!
Don’t give them any expectation. Tell them “I am currently earning x, and I would definitely be expecting more than x, but I haven’t thought about a number yet. I’d like to focus on the interviews and then think about salary when the time is right”
Just had the interview today and they say they'd like to proceed.
Don't say what you're currently earning, especially if it's peanuts
