Move from Amazon L5 to Google L4?

Passed the Hiring Comittee and recruiter says they put me at L4 but was considering L5. They think I could be promoted in a year or two with the right manager and scope. Not sure if that’s what they tell everyone though.

- Is it worth moving to Google from Amazon for basically the same level? I heard promotions take much longer at Google.

- Will Google try to match my current pay or will they go lower if I don’t have a competing offer? Will some teams pay more than others?

Thanks!

Promotion takes longer at Google. But then Amazon L5 and Google L4 are the correct mappings. (Google starts at L3 and Amazon starts at L4)

Don’t worry about pay. Google’s refreshers and bonus policy are much better than Amazon’s.

The promotion within a year or two is bs. it depends on how you perform and it’s doable but it’s hard. Pay is not team dependent. It’s determined by a different committee.

You will get a standard L4 offer by default. Then you negotiate it. Counter offers don’t matter as much as your Hc score.

Not really. If your HC score is low, then high counter offers after a point won’t matter even if there’s room within your level’s band. Simply because google doesn’t want you that much. This is independent of google low balling by default for all HC scores.

Yep. High HC score, Low competing offers = Low Pay. Low HC score, high competing offers = low pay.

Do you need a good HC score to get 300K TC for L4? Say the competing offer is higher than 300K.

      Yep, < 10% of L4 offers cross 300k.

Yeah. HC score is kind of indicative of how much Google wants you in some sense.

With a really solid HC score you can get even 250k as L3 and 300k+ as L4.

I would take it no matter what TC. Leaving amazon is good for mental health.

Do you think that’s true throughout Google or is it still team dependent?

Higher chances of working in a sane team at Google.

You can still eat as much bananas as you want at Google, it's just that you have other options too.

I don't know that L5 promo at Google is really any harder than L6 promo at Amazon. Both are hard, require lots of data and probably more than a year or two unless you are obviously underleveled and a superstar. Unless you are convinced you have an L6 promo coming in the next quarter or two at Amazon, I would not say this is a reason to stay in itself, given how challenging L6 promos are to get through in many orgs.

Depends how long you've been 5 at Amazon? If your stay would you get to 6 soon?

In general I'd think a lateral move from Amazon to g is a good thing but it probably depends on your offer too

I’ve been a L5 for about a year and a half. I’ve known people who get promoted around the 2 year mark but it probably depends on the org. I’m not sure I’m in an org that can get promoted that fast.

Yes, that's what they tell everyone, you will not be promoted in a year or two
Yes, it is still worth moving even if the level and compensation are the same, you'll learn a lot of cool stuff.
It depends, negotiate hard, getting competing offers will help.
No, team matching is unrelated to compensation.

In Amazon you can reach to L5 from new grad within 1-2 years while google normally don’t give L5 unless it’s >6 yoe. Ofc there are outliers but you get the idea.
I was even offered l3 from G with 3 yoe. So I’d say it’s a fair to good offer, depending on you yoe
