~2 years of work ex Currently work as Research/DL Engineer in some Applied Research team (Bay Area) . No problems with current job other than stock going downhill. Offered same Engineering role for Amazon Go Applied Research team(Seattle) . Excluding TC considerations, how is the wlb, career growth, culture, etc at Amazon/Amazon Go? Is Amazon work ex more valuable than Nvidia?
Go
Did you ask for the hike ?
TC is not important at this point. Partner and me earn more than enough for needs. The main consideration is if work is good, wlb, career growth, ease to chnage jobs etc
Careful of Amazon go. It's a messed up team.
If it ain't broke.. Don't fix it
Do you know what's happenings in your company now.. Then you don't get second thought.
I don’t think you should worry too much about stock going downhill. Nvidia is a strong company after all. It will recover.
Aside from TC... WLB: most likely worse at Amazon. It's a busy company and full of intensity. It does, of course, vary from team to team and org to org, but generally speaking, Nvidia seems much more laid back and invested in their employees vs trying to optimize their employees for the business. That said, I worked with some great people/teams there, so YMMV. Career growth: probably better at Amazon. If you succeed, it's just a larger company both vertically (more layers to press through through promotions) and horizontally (more initiatives and projects). That being said, promotions are also notoriously challenging at higher levels, and if you're not an engineer * or can be challenging at any level. (*engineer promotes are practically on clockwork for the lower levels via a host of internal tools and processes.) Culture: This one is more subjective, but I think Amazon has a worse culture, generally speaking, but it really depends on what you mean by culture. Nvidia seems to treat their employees more like a big family, has regular company initiatives throughout the year to help local communities, and has a history of banding together through low points (last recession, etc.). Again, YMMV between different teams or orgs. Another consideration is the locale. Seattle is one of the most beautiful places in the world for about 2-3 months of the year. Otherwise it tends to be gray, cold and wet. Do you like city life? Seattle is OK, but not much more. Do you like outdoor activities? The Pacific Northwest is perfect for hiking, camping, climbing, biking, skiing, etc. Have a family? Compared to the valley, Seattle has a lower cost of living, and the are many decent homes and schools within 30 minutes of Amazon's Seattle campus.
Work culture : Nvidia is manager centric. While Amazon is more like you drive evrything.
Great point! That is one thing I miss about Amazon.
If you like your job and team at Nvidia, don't worry too much about stock. We have had an ESPP reset, and future RSU grants will be at a lower share price (more shares) compared to the last one. If you believe the company will grow revenue again, then sock should follow.
Living I Seattle is great in terms of WLB. But Amazon not be the best company for that. Maybe you should consider that there is also a NVIDIA office in Redmond. Various teams working on interesting DL related projects. Let me know if autonomous driving team would be interesting for you.
Don't move for no TC hike
