Move from Toronto to Bay? AMA

Expecting an offer for Google in Mountain View L4/L5. Currently work in Toronto in core downtown. My entire family friends and GF are here. I like my team, work is interesting, city is great. Worth moving from Toronto to Bay? TC: 160 CAD 5 YOE

What’s the offer because 160 CAD is poverty wages in Bay.

Cost of living is much lower in Toronto. 160 CAD is a large amount of money in Toronto.

I haven’t got the offer yet, but the recruiter said on-site feedback was excellent, waiting on hiring committee. Based on levels fyi probably 250 for L4 closer to 300 for L5.

I made that move years ago. It was worth it for me.

Can you expand more on your experience would love to hear it

Salaries were lower when I left then you have in Toronto. But I’ve been in a lot of major product launches at multiple companies and met my wife down here. Being close to decision makers helps your career. The one thing that drives me nuts is the lack of civility in politics. And the drive to go backwards. It’s the only place things move forward in one aspect of your life but backwards in the social fabric of life.

Depends if you like winters or not

Its the 8 months of grey that gets to me, the cold isnt too bad. Weather is a big motivation for me to move actually.

Then it would probably be worth it to you. Dont forget to factor health insurance and healthcare costs into your numbers. Foreign nationals often forget about that

I'd think twice about moving here. The income looks good, but the expenses are much higher

Amazon YcUP73 OP Jul 2, 2019

What income range would be worth it? Can you expand a bit?

Made the move several years ago, and the only thing that keeps me here is really money and job opportunities. If you are single and not planning to stay for long term US$200k will probably get you comparable quality of life at your current salary, otherwise US$300k if you want to stay long term buy property and build a family

Also after moving to Bay Area I learned to appreciate the Canadian government a lot more
