Moved to Amazon, already missing Microsoft benefits

People keep cribbing about compensation, rightfully.

But the difference you're seeing is not as signficant as it appears. There are a lot of benefits we take for granted in Microsoft. Just over a month in Amazon and I'm already noticing that very clearly.

There is a problem to fix, but not as bad as people complaint here. And yes, the internal vs new hires difference is still a big concern I think.

The other side of the grass is always green!

I think healthcare is fine now. They have usual suspects with more or less same premiums. Sodas matter to kids so that’s mute point. 401k sucks at Amazon for sure.

Valuing soda as 4000 is insane. Is more like 1000 benefit at best. All companies offer free coffee btw, including Amazon

the difference in benefit is about 10k per year which can be easily factored in the comp analysis

For the company you are all commodity unless you invented something they sell or have a patent etc. don’t use soda to access your self worth.

Yeah the estimate cost of sodas was exaggerated in order to accommodate even the outliers. Anyways, I don't see any company who doesn't treat their employees as commodity. If I ain't performing I get thrown out irrespective of the company. It's after all corporate.

Why use straw drinking soda? Why not drink directly or pour into a mug.
      May 24
    • Neurocrine D.Trump
Yes. Straw is the most useless thing I have seen around. Unless one has physical problems with eating/, drinking, there's no reason absolutely to use a straw. You just inhale air everytime you suck which fills your belly.

I like that this thread has really taken off in the hot topic of straws. Also, I have since switched to a reusable straw. The reason that I personally prefer “straw” (since it’s seems to be a cool trend to leave out articles) is because I can be on calls, or working, and I can take a drink without tilting my head back. I can just easily and quickly drink while talking or typing.

Actually I’m very happy they don’t serve soda. Avoids unhealthy temptation. For those that need it, it costs 10$ in Costco for a months supply

Meanwhile we have fully stocked kitchens in SF, NYC and DC (HQ), 7.5% 401k match, great WLB, $350 health credit/year for your personal use in form of gift card for Amazon and travel perks. We're also usually 1st-2nd tier sponsors for tech conferences, hackathons or events like SXSW that our engineers present in or get to attend (another example is Grace Hopper). We don't get RSUs that's true.

What is “internal vs new hire “ thing ?
    May 24 1
    • Microsoft 4;$?&;/?!
I guess it’s a reference to the huge sign on bonus and stock resulting in new hires having much higher compensation than employees who have been at the company longer.

This was in reference to Sunnyvale. Target in terms of perks is like the anti-thesis of the Bay Area. But the greatest perk you get is unlimited independence and decent wfh options.
