Moving from FAANG to non-FAANG

Jul 11, 2018 16 Comments

My work at Apple and my team has become notoriously toxic and my wlb has gotten worse, can’t take this anymore. I did try internal transfers but it didn’t work.

Thinking about taking a Manager role with lesser known established company in SF. Is this wise ? How much should I ask in base and comp?

Yes, leave the toxic place. It isn't worth it. It will take a toll on your well-being

Is Facebook even relevant? I thought the new Facebook is called Instagram.🤣

Someone will tell you pay and level matter more than company name.

Both are important. At a conference, for example, an engineer from Facebook would have way more audience than an engineer from a local business, unless you are some known figure. It’s a reality. But yeah, pay is king!

My personal experience is you won't grow when in a toxic place, leaving to a lesser place to grow will be better, at least in the long run.

For all those curious cuckoos making a ruckus about FANG and FAANG- to clarify, I was FANG before I joined Apple. In any case I’ve updated the thread.

Can you describe what things are making your team toxic? I'm considering switching to Apple but I've been hearing bad things about wlb and closed doors culture.

Go to established Chipset/Semiconductor companies like Nvidia, Qualcomm - you won’t have to compromise so much on base
