Anyone moved from FB to Amazon? How do you feel? And those who moved from Amazon to FB, I know there are a lot of you. How do you feel? How do you compare E5 at FB and SDE 3 at Amazon as a role? According to levels.fyi they are similar roles. Are they considered similar only because what you get paid? Or SDE 3 are just better than E5s? YOE: 10 TC: 350 (I don't know actually. Market is so fluctuating. 😝)
Amazon is more disciplined when it comes to their methodology in making engineering decisions. Facebook does not seem to have a distinctive engineering process of its own. Amazon is also better in cross team roadmap alignment. Facebook is centered more around individual “impact” rather than cross org long term vision. SDE3 is more inline with E6 rather than E5. You must be capable of achieving through others to be SDE3. That is not always the case with E5. Start in Amazon, learn engineering discipline. And later on join the facebook jungle to cash in your skill and get a higher TC.
Did you move from Amazon to Facebook? For a change I am getting better TC at Amazon. May be I can get something similar if I stay at FB and race through PSC after 2 years. So I just want to take what is in hand now. I am just worried whether it will be worse than Facebook in terms of WLB or politics. I am capable of mentoring people and get a lot of work done, if given lot of people.
Most seasoned E5 needs to work through others. Seasoned E5 ~= SDE3/L6
Moved from AMZN to FB. The top 10% engineers at Amazon are just as good as anyone at FB or Google, but you’ll see a large variance of talent. AMZN managers also tend be less supportive than FB ones. In terms of levels, if you’re E5, don’t accept anything less than L6.
Top 10% of Amazon is comparably all to FB/G? :/
+1 to the management comment. EMs are expected to know deep technical details of the services they support. They are the all up product owner for their group. Consequently that means less time spent on pure people support.
When will people realize that the alignment between levels you see on levels.fyi is arbitrary? Go and create an entry for a random company and you’ll see how it’s done — you basically randomly stretch the widget until it looks right to you.
I guess everyone realizes it. That's why this post is.
FB perks are extra $30k+. Unless Amazon is offering you $400k+, it's not worth moving.
Perhaps better WLB and less pressure of PIP? I never worked for either company but it seem FB is more stressful than Amazon these days.
Possible. FB is a stressful place, but TC makes up for it. I have never worked at Amazon.
What is your yoe and Amazon offer?
