Has anyone done this? My wife doesn't work in tech (medical research), no kids. It looks like there are way more opportunities in the bay area and I'm interviewing with bay area companies (LinkedIn, AirBnB) for roles in the Bay Area. The cost of living scares the shit out of me. Based on some calculations, even a 30% bump in base pay will just be a wash. Add to it the fact that my wife will be looking for jobs for the first few months, it seems like a total gamble. Looking for insights from folks who've done this.
There are quite a few opportunities for medical research in the Bay Area (Genentech comes to mind). Cost of living is rough but so is commute time.
What kind of medical research ? Clinical research? Gilead , Genentech, Roche , Abbott . My wife is in medical research too and we did opposite move and you can move but housing prices will kill you. Be prepare to do more job hopping in the bay and it’s new norm.
Clinical research. So far it seems like a solid "no" against moving to the bay given the cost of living.
Yes Juno , Seattle genetics and Fred hutch and lot of research firms and join CRO in Seattle and do not move .
Don’t do it. Moved from the bay to Seattle simply because my wife & both work in tech and STILL couldn’t afford property within a reasonable cost. Schools there suck, CA is in a perpetual drought, and there are addicts from Berkeley to SF and everywhere in between. Seattle is dope in comparison.
Do not move to the Bay, you will regret it. Toxic as hell.
I mulled over that decision for a while now. I choose Austin over California. I was in Seattle for 3 years. I am previously from Texas so this is closer to family too.
We keep so much more of our money now.
I moved from SFBA to Seattle a couple of years ago. I don’t see any reason to move from Seattle to BA. Even the weather. It may vary greatly depending on the location. San Jose is way too hot, San Francisco is foggy and gloomy (and dirty). Somewhere in Palo Alto/San Mateo area it is more comfortable, but you commute would be terrible as well as cost of living.
Don't do it. Bay Area 30+ years recently moved to Austin. Don't believe the hype about CA especially Bay Area.
Dude if you’re in Seattle definitely don’t do it. If you keep looking for the right opportunity I have friends making Bay Area TC in Seattle. I’m born and raised here in the bay and plan on leaving in December. The home costs will kill you alone and lifestyle sucks. Don’t do it.
Not worth it for the pay bump alone, there are plenty of opportunities in Seattle. If you can stand the Seattle weather and the Seattle freeze just stay. Certainly if you see kids on the horizon this isn’t a great move.
I can totally stand the Seattle weather and the freeze. I've lived here about half my life. My primary reason is just the sheer number of opportunities in the bay compared to Seattle.
Seattle has tons of opportunities, it’s the 2nd biggest tech center in the world.
