Moving to CA, 3 grand to register my cars, how to optimize?

Purchased 2 vehicles a month ago. CA wants over $3K in sales tax to register because it was less than 1 year since purchase. WTF? Any way to not pay / reduce this?

This is depressing. Any positive sides of living in CA?

High TC? But you can get that in Seattle with no state income tax and half the rent.

Yes, the rest of the world all of a sudden doesn't seem too bad a place to live.

Just wait until you start paying the 13.3% state income tax and $4k for rent.

I think you have a 20 day grace period after becoming a state resident. After that, if you don't and are pulled over I think you can get fined.

I don't, think it's at least a few hundred bucks but never been fined on that myself

Bring bills of sale that report the value of the car much lower than the actual sales price. The DMV will take highest value between what they estimate and what you provide in the bill of sale. That is your best bet.

Keep an old address and registered in another state. Downside of being caught is you just pay and say you travel to the out of state address often

Also a good point. I’ll probably try to stretch it as much as possible.

You are eligible to claim a sales tax refund from your current state’s DMV. Check the application form, it mentions a site for more info.

You will need a CA registration/title though to prove you are not using the existing registration anymore.
