Currently in the US and considering moving to India next year. I work in the security domain. What is the best strategy to move? Find a company in the US and move internally to India or quit the job in the US, move to India and find another job there? How is Master’s degree in the US perceived in India? Any personal experience would be helpful. YOE 3 TC 180k
You will be respected for your degree in US. However I am not sure if that would reflect in your TC .To which city you are relocating?
Bangalore or Hyderabad depending on the job opportunity
try to find the TC you can expect in India and make a decision keeping that in mind. quitting and then joining, or moving internally are smaller decisions in comparison to this
If TC was the sole reason, OP would have never moved out of US to India. There must be some other reason. Anyway, in those cities you mentioned, you should be able to find a good job matching your profile and with a pay which is as good as your current TC not in terms of currency conversion but considering purchasing power parity.
You can always to any product based company and eventually change the job after few months to increase the TC.
The only way to match TC, I think the following works: A job which values an individual so much that they can’t find them in any random city, once they find a person , they need to stick to their whims and fancies. Here are some examples of those jobs: A film star. An instagram influencer capable of influencing the minds of a million folks. A C-level / VP - level executive, capable of creating a large organization in a company. A proved quantitative analyst. These guys are hard to find, and I have seen salaries upwards of 100K USD in India for 2-4 yrs of experience. An executive of high value who is experienced in things that are not available in the local market. Eg : Raghuram Rajan / ex governor of RBI / Ex chief of IMF. If you don’t aspire to be any of these, a Masters degree would make a huge difference in your TC.
Find a job here and get an offer with substantial stock component. Transfer internally to India. Your stock grant stays with you. So your tc will remain exceptionally high for first 3 years.
+1
Yeah that’s a good point. The stock grant from US will boost the TC up in India. The thing is what if your company doesn’t have the same team in India? In that case, I might have to move to different team or change streams (from security to SE or anything else)
Have you spent much time in India? I would hope you have before you take that leap.
Why are you moving back?

As you arrive, the markets are filled with sights and delights beyond imagination. Music fills the air as silk fabrics and spices of every color align the city streets.
