Moving to London from Seattle what should my compensation be?

Taking a London Facebook role as a E6.

I'm currently a 66 at Microsoft in Seattle.

TC $420k

What should I be asking for as a TC?

Cost of living in London (United Kingdom) is 13% more expensive than in Seattle, Washington (United States)

But... Does the TC line up that way too? Should I be asking for a 13% increase from my current TC?

Thanks all for your responses. I've heard the same, but can't help but feel that's it's all anecdotal.

Anyone actually know anyone that's gone through with going to the UK then? It can't be that bad...

Guess comes down to how much they want you to move to London. Also I feel many might move to Europe for the lifestyle rather than money

And no one is moving to London, OP :)
Everyone moves to Seattle these days for big $$ and cheaper housing.

I moved to Seattle from another EU location and, after 2 years, I’m seriously considering moving back to EU. Yes, I’ll take a ~40% paycut, but there are things I don’t get in here: quality of life in all various aspects, from food to safety, from culture to long vacations, and so on.

@Bco - did you get a pay bump when you went to Seattle from EU?

      Yes, around 40% bump

I mean... Serious question. I keep hearing about lower pay when moving abroad.

It is totally different base pay. Forget about US comp when thinking about Europe

Also keep in mind that if you are an American citizen you will have double tax liabilities - both to the UK as well as Uncle Sam. European taxes are typically higher than that in US

You pay no US tax up to 90k once living abroad and most of the taxes you pay while in London can be returned as long as you’re not there for more than 6 years.

    I saw on levels.fyi a TC of $220k in London for a E6...

-40% tax w/o any conception of tax return. Seattle is the best, especially money wise.

The pay in London is pretty shitty... That's across the market. And Facebook follows the market.
It's highly likely you will be taking a pay cut without even accounting for that 13% increase in spending.

Man you’ll be extremely lucky if you can make even half of that in London

    Using my mental model:
    Labour market discount: ~25-30%
    Exchange rate: ~.7 GBP/USD

Assuming gross comp is staying relatively similar but with the above applied:
    ~£200-220k

Could probably bump up to £230-250k TC though.

What about taxes and everything? I'm still a us citizen. I think I still need to pay federal?

There's a tax treaty with the US.. You only pay whichever tax for where you are ordinarly resident/domiciled, I believe.

Yah, you're looking at a 30-50% cut most likely. Pay for software folks in London is generally terrible compared to the States. American tech companies and finance make it less terrible but you'll never see the same sort of numbers. (We have a London office and people do okay there but it's about 60% of what they'd get here.)

Also I believe taxes would be higher in the UK

Than Seattle, yeah. They're quite close to Californian taxes I'm told.

Lol man dont even think about moving here, I would assume the most you can get as E6 here is around 170k GBP TC but taxes are insanely high (e.g. stock tax is 55% lol)

erm, E6's make significantly more than £170k GBP, stock tax isn't 55% either..

From what I understand it's about 25% pay cut if you move to London

So... Given the taxes, lower market rate, what should be a realistic number I should be asking for?
