Moving to Seattle from NYC

Thinking of moving to Seattle/Redmond. Tired of the over crowded city and the 1 hour one-way commute. I am good at building backend micro services and want to continue building good distributed systems. Also looking for decent WLB.

TC: 240K 4 YOE.

Planning to do 5 interviews in a row. In talks with Google recruiter. Not interested to work for Facebook but will interview for the competing offer. What are the three other companies i can target?

    “Tired of the 1-hour commute”

Uh I have some bad news for you if you want to live in Redmond and work in Seattle. Seattle-area traffic is notoriously bad.

Yes that’s the plan and walk/bike to work.

Commute to SLU from Redmond isn’t bad at all, compared to NYC.

NYC commute is better even if it is longer. Mainly because the trains are on time 90% of the time. Don’t have to walk a lot if you live in the right place because of all the connections. Only problem is no internet in the subway. You are stuck between reading books/playing games.

There’re normally shuttles from Redmond to Seattle, with Internet and stuff.

What's your budget? You should be able to share an apartment in Manhattan for under 2k/mo (easily) and your commute should be much less than one hour

Pretty big ego huh? Talked to a recruiter and think you have two offers? 🤔

I am not sure how that sounded like a big jerk. No offense but you have to believe in yourself if you really want something.

Just talking like a done deal but you haven’t even done a phone interview. I would try amazon, Microsoft and uber additionally.

I've interviewed for both MS and amazon and can confirm if OP can get into Citadel, Ms and amazon should be a joke

He’s talking about google and fb will just be his counter, these interviews are challenging and even excellent brilliant engineers don’t get through, it partially requires luck. Even very famous engineers who founded super successful companies have failed.

You can def get a reasonable offer at MS if you go for senior band, and the WLB is phenomenal.

Well, I presume Seattle’s equivalent of NYC’s 240K is 210K. For which level does MS start paying 210K?

      Microsoft Level 62 gets 210K

Can 4 yoe get me level 62? Senior band starts from 63?

If you rock the interviews you can get senior. Not entirely dependent on YOE.

    Snap, OCI, and Dropbox.

The problem with twitter, Apple, Microsoft, amazon, etc., is that they don’t pay as much.
And Uber, lyft, Airbnb, Pinterest, etc., offer paper money which G and fb don’t fully match.

tbh I think most of these companies (aside from non-IPO startups) will pay handsomely for the right candidate

      OP
Thought Apple paid almost equal to G and FB. Heard Dropbox is one of the hardest companies to get into. Not sure about the future of Snap. Is there LinkedIn or Twitter in Seattle?
      Oct 28, 2018
    • Apple / Eng cho Chang
LinkedIn is not in Seattle, but twitter is. If you’re not interested in snap, then twitter is a good replacement.

And yes, Dropbox is super competitive, but you’re applying to fb and G which are also really competitive..

Depending on liquidity needs, pre-IPO is a viable option. I don’t expect much of a discount if at all with Airbnb or Uber. Also, we now offer even better benefits like mega backdoor Roth at max contribution that matches big public companies, free IVF cycles (for families) and quarterly vesting schedule with no cliff.

Is it really that bad in Seattle?

NYC was definitely better for me. I'm in SF now aka "Man Francisco" and it honestly hasn't been as bad as all the threads/post about it sucking here.

I wouldn't rule anything out. You might not get a comparable offer from Google. For a long time I wrote off FB but I really regret it.

Obviously I’m going to advocate considering Airbnb. Growing teams for both platform and business units. Near top of market TC and benefits. You can decide how much liquidity you need but I believe the base and bonuses are enough with a payout coming soon. Leadership will continue to invest in growing our presence. The office is a great size that feels like a small company where everyone knows each other. Strong WLB so you have a life outside the office. Executive leadership improving with President of core business from Amazon (Prime) and CTO from Google (Cloud/Infra).

New apartments offering 2 months free rent (and some) because of over supply in Seattle. Your commute will be 15 min or less with us and a handful of others.

With 240k TC you can def live anywhere in Manhattan, assuming you aren't supporting a family of 4. Why are you living so far away

Getting 5 comparable interviews in a row is tough. I realized this the hard way. Recruiters just don't respond to applications , not even when you personally email them via LinkedIn. Google and Facebook recruiters usually do, but getting messy results with other companies that I had planned for . Plan way in advance.
Another point to remember - referrals have a much better chance , maybe try to get some from Blind

Tons of different non tech companies in Seattle. You can check out Zillow, redfin, qualtrics, etc. Just do a quick Google search for companies with swe jobs in Seattle

Yes, NYC is a real city with transit options. You have no idea, the west coast is drive, drive, drive. But Seattle is way better than SoCal

OP, are you ready for the change of pace in life in Seattle? It'll be dramatically different from NYC, some ways good, some ways bad. Really depends on your stage of life and what your looking for. I grew up in Seattle, spent a few years in NYC after college.
