Thinking of moving to Seattle/Redmond. Tired of the over crowded city and the 1 hour one-way commute. I am good at building backend micro services and want to continue building good distributed systems. Also looking for decent WLB. TC: 240K 4 YOE. Planning to do 5 interviews in a row. In talks with Google recruiter. Not interested to work for Facebook but will interview for the competing offer. What are the three other companies i can target?
Well...there are two other big ones you might consider....
Pretty big ego huh? Talked to a recruiter and think you have two offers? 🤔
I am not sure how that sounded like a big jerk. No offense but you have to believe in yourself if you really want something.
Just talking like a done deal but you haven’t even done a phone interview. I would try amazon, Microsoft and uber additionally.
Snap, OCI, and Dropbox. The problem with twitter, Apple, Microsoft, amazon, etc., is that they don’t pay as much. And Uber, lyft, Airbnb, Pinterest, etc., offer paper money which G and fb don’t fully match.
tbh I think most of these companies (aside from non-IPO startups) will pay handsomely for the right candidate
Thought Apple paid almost equal to G and FB. Heard Dropbox is one of the hardest companies to get into. Not sure about the future of Snap. Is there LinkedIn or Twitter in Seattle?
Is it really that bad in Seattle?
NYC was definitely better for me. I'm in SF now aka "Man Francisco" and it honestly hasn't been as bad as all the threads/post about it sucking here.
OP, are you ready for the change of pace in life in Seattle? It'll be dramatically different from NYC, some ways good, some ways bad. Really depends on your stage of life and what your looking for. I grew up in Seattle, spent a few years in NYC after college.
Tons of different non tech companies in Seattle. You can check out Zillow, redfin, qualtrics, etc. Just do a quick Google search for companies with swe jobs in Seattle
Getting 5 comparable interviews in a row is tough. I realized this the hard way. Recruiters just don't respond to applications , not even when you personally email them via LinkedIn. Google and Facebook recruiters usually do, but getting messy results with other companies that I had planned for . Plan way in advance. Another point to remember - referrals have a much better chance , maybe try to get some from Blind
With 240k TC you can def live anywhere in Manhattan, assuming you aren't supporting a family of 4. Why are you living so far away
Yes, NYC is a real city with transit options. You have no idea, the west coast is drive, drive, drive. But Seattle is way better than SoCal

“Tired of the 1-hour commute” Uh I have some bad news for you if you want to live in Redmond and work in Seattle. Seattle-area traffic is notoriously bad.
Seattle is cheaper so I can rent an apartment within 20 mins from the office. It’s too expensive in NYC to rent an apartment 20 mins from the office.
Or y'know just live in Seattle proper because rent is pretty cheap compared to NYC.
