Moving to amazon from WallStreet firm

I am recently offered a role in Amazon as SDM. The comp is 20-25% better than what I am making for an investment firm. (TC 360K vs 280K). This role is in New York for the ad world. I think I work in a fairly stressful environment and usually work 50-55 hours a week. however, I was alarmed when I spoke to interviewers and they advised me not to join if I was looking for a WLB. I am not sure how to quantify this information. As this was during the interview, I didnt want to make a bad impression and dive too much into WLB. However, I would like to know from Amazonians (especially anyone coming from InvestmentBanking) if the culture is really that different and cutthroat. I have 2 kids but a very supporting wife who is willing to support me if I take this job. Any information is useful. Ultimately it's my decision, but want to make sure I have all the data points to make an informed decision. The org is Ads, but I have another option as well if I really go back to the recruiter. Thanks in advance

L7 and only 360 does not sound right L6 might make sense .

False.

What is the truth then ?

Amazon Xljp38 Jul 22, 2018

Not bad at all, Amazon has a bad rep for WLB, but I've going that it's not true and really depends on the team culture/org/manager. If you work 45-50 hours, you're solid, 9-6:30pm workday is the norm

Yea if You are getting 360 as an L7 you are getting a very low offer. NY also is a premium market which means You get paid more bcuz of the cost of living is higher there. I hired an L6 in Austin who tc was what You getting

ok, this is what I was offered by the recruiter in first email. I haven't responded back and I will get an offer letter after I confirm. I wonder if it has to do with my current comp. I am sure I can get a little more, but money isnt that important for me. I just don't want to end up in a bad company where I cant keep up with 70-80 hr weeks.

Amazon DLgT03 Jul 22, 2018

The WLB is honestly What you make it. Amazon is one of those companies if You give them 80hr weeks they will take it, but if you get your work done in a 40hr week then cool. I suck at creating WLB where my manager and team leave at 4 and never work weekends. But You want to check on that comp though. 360 for an L7 is very low. L6 engineers make 400+

That means exactly what have they said: thereā€™s very little ā€œLā€ in Amazonā€™s WLB.

Barclays PLC LreX88 OP Jul 22, 2018

I hear you mate! I am coming from a different industry and at least I used to feel I have a fairly demanding work schedule. (I am at work by 7:30 am and leave by 5:30 pm.) But anything more than that and with NY commute is potentially a deal-breaker. Also, is SDM's WLB worse than engineers?

Amazon VdeQ78 Jul 23, 2018

Canā€™t really tell, could be as miserable as SDEā€™s

Veritas 13Jija Jul 22, 2018

OP - Expect 10%-15% addition to your existing work hours. Amazon sucks!

I got $350k for L6 SDM. I think $450k is more acceptable for L7 SDM.

Barclays PLC LreX88 OP Jul 22, 2018

ok, I will check again unless I misunderstood. THe title was SDM

Apple Bias4Actio Jul 22, 2018

There's 3 levels of SDM. L5, L6 and L7. L6 is the most common for someone to be hired externally for. L7 would be more common if you've managed large teams and have managers reporting to you. The next step up us L8, which is director level.

Ask What level
