I’m a student in Toronto Canada and I’m currently doing an internship in the US and halfway through I miss my family and friends a lot. How do people move to the US for work fulltime after graduation? Just seems hard leaving everything and everyone behind for an extended period of time (even vacation aren’t very frequent) Edit: sorry I didn’t mean to complain or make it seem like my situation was bad compared to others, just wanted to ask for genuine advice and hear peoples opinions
Grow up, buddy! You should be grateful to have OPTIONs. Ask your Indian coworkers to see how worse their situation than yours. Work hard and save money to do whatever it you want later in life.
Work hard. Drink hard. Welcome to the US!
Thanks mr tusk
OP, you are in CANADA and rue missing your near and dear ones. Really, as faangdream opined (albeit somewhat rudely), it is SO much more harder for people who've moved here from really far away. Living away from family is indeed hard, and the feeling doesn't magically disappear just because you are an adult. Moving abroad or even living abroad for an extended period of time isn't easy, and expat depression is a real thing. Just sharing to let you know you aren't alone: https://www.theskinny.co.uk/travel/living-abroad/moving-abroad-expect-expat-depression
I completely understand your situation moving from India or somewhere else but I don’t think it should undermine the fact that moving away from home is hard. In my case it’s across the continent, some people it’s from a different state, and for others like yourself it’s across the world. Regardless of how far the distance is, it’s difficult and I was just seeking advice and wanted to hear peoples opinions on how they do it
Yes, of course, in no way did I mean to undermine your feelings. In fact, after my statement above, I meant to add this very thing: that the fact that you've moved from RELATIVELY closeby does NOT mean your reality is not real! In the hurry to share the link, I missed adding this part, sorry. Do know I empathize with you, and totally understand. My comment was in support of you, not against.
Surround yourself with people sharing your hobbies hang out more with them
That’s a good tip! What are your hobbies?
I used to be like you. I just got a job with good enough TC for me to take a weekend trip back home every month, and called home frequently. Eventually, home became where I lived, and not where my parents lived, so I stopped being as needy. Give it time.
It’s hard, but that sweet TC is why people do it.
It’s sooo hard especially right out of college, but like you said, TC is like double than in Toronto (with the conversion rate)
More than double without conversion rate you mean.
