Yeah it includes the increased stock price. Some of the earlier grants are worth much more now. The last year or so’s been shitty for the stock though.

No specialization or huge diff counts. I just try to work on stuff that matters to people above me. I can ramp up on a new area really fast, which makes me useful when something’s on fire.

Oracle doesn't give bumps with a promo either. I don't know if we even get bumps at all. I'll probably leave after my initial RSUs vest since I'm assuming I won't get refreshers either. OCI is probably better with this stuff (I'm not in OCI).

A terrifying statistic: so far, posters here other than myself have gotten raises in 62 of 63 person-years. Of the person-years without raises, I have 17 of the 18. How are your employers rewarding you so frequently and so consistently? Surely there must be hard times and unprofitable years where they have to cut back on pay?

      Mar 15
    • Salesforce / MgmtGQch66
I went through dot com boom and bust. Ironically, all of my big raises have been while staying at a company, rather than by switching. Early on, in early 2000s, raises were to keep up with the market. Later, the big ones were role changes, promotions, and after affects of being acquired. Other than that, raises were of the typical few percent variety.

It's for a single person. A couple would want twice that space; more with kids. My wife and I live in 410 square feet in a 50 year old building that cost 15m yen or 135k USD. With these numbers my 45k TC looks fine.

    2016 $450k
    2017 $600k
2018 $700k (changed jobs, does not include Lyft RSUs)

    Few thoughts:
    1. Base pay does not matter. One advice, always negotiate for higher RSU’s. Base will automatically adjusted as companies try to do market adjustment over time and get everyone into a certain band
    2. The RSU component is much bigger at more senior levels, obviously. But it also means that in a bull market, you get exponentially higher comp bump highlighted by the last few years
    Mar 1510
    • Oscar 🐨koala
Base matters a lot when you are not working for a publicly traded company. Obviously if you are working for startup you are betting a 100x return.
      Mar 15
    • Facebook xxkw86
How can you get $700k without counting RSU?
      Mar 15
    • 300k base with 400k bonus, there are lots of partitions. They're probably a VP
      Mar 15
    • I changed jobs in the middle of the year, so collected RSUs from my earlier company and then a decent sign on bonus

Base matters when you need money to upkeep your family. After making enough for your monthly expenses then RSU make more sense. I didn't think of it before. I always care about base because I needed the money.
      Mar 17
    • I mean base within reason. Having said that, most companies don’t have a cliff any more, so RSUs are as good as base.
      Mar 17
    • RSUs are easier for companies to be more aggressive on.
      Mar 17
    • And most companies always have market adjustments which get your base bumped back to the mid point or something like that

@idggaupir I should add, after 2020 I'll have fully vested my initial options grant, and then TC will drop closer to 300k in 2021. Probably will look to either FANG or another unicorn.

Don’t. Everyone counts equity as total compensation and it trickles in and is subject to drop at any time. Cash comp is the only thing that matters.

No, not "common", but certainly possible. It is important to realize that people on blind seem to represent the upper echelon of engineers and earners. The average software engineer salary out of school is usually between 60-70k, at least from what I've seen with post grad surveys.
