I am a travel junkie, WLB and culture is the key for me. Loveeee Seattle. Yup, Expedia is my dream company. Unfortunately, I talked to Hr and they don’t have any openings for the positions I am looking for...:(
Expedia will be done the moment Google or Amazon decide to transact travel.
why?
Thin margins. Tech debt. They don’t own the backend airline reservation system. They compete with airlines now that offer better experiences. Google and Amazon entry would create a perfect storm and they wouldn’t be able to innovate and compete with newer tech.
Go to Booking instead. Expedia miles behind and use them as a reference point ;)
Are you hiring pm? Haha
Booking are always hiring PMs. Moving into experiences now. All tech and product in Amsterdam though!
Yes but that team moved to Amsterdam as well so now you’d need to relocate permanently !
Op said he/she looooves Seattle. I think that's a big part of why Expedia is the dream company. Its the combination of subject matter + locale.
I want to move to Amsterdam but I heard they only sponsor developers and engineers and senior data scientist. So that true? Would they ever sponsor an entry or associate data scientist without PhD?
I hope your dream also includes a 40% pay cut. Enjoy
Go to booking. In Expedia, we are just copying what booking is doing, so why not just join the original one. In product team, if you want to do anything different, just say booking has it, then management would say yes.
Why not look at Alaska Airlines? They aren’t as high tech, but you can’t beat the flight benefits and WLB. WLB is getting worse at Expedia because of all the growth in London and Gurgaon.
Have to jump in here as someone who works for Expedia and loves it. Sure, we don’t get paid like Amazon does, but we also have work life balance and a lot of other things that to me are priceless. Keep trying if this is what you want!
I loved working at Expedia. I traveled several times every month when I worked there. However San Francisco is a miserable shithole. I don't think I'd want to live in Seattle either..
Do you get to travel as a part of work though?
Expedia is not shy in sending thier employees to offices in other countries. And we're put up in good places when we travel. If you work in a team that is spread in many locations, it's likely you will visit your team I other countries especially if you're not an entry level employee.
T&E have been HEAVY cut recently. Don't come here counting on it unless it's required within the job. Same for international placements and rotations.
