This ideology that we are all family here at work is the biggest scam ever perpetuated to get employees to work more and to attempt to reduce turnover. My manager and my colleagues are not my family. They do not care about me or support me the way my family does. They haven't known me all my life and seen my successes and failures. I can't confide in them. If my kids are sick unexpectedly they aren't sympathetic but inconvenienced. I don't want to know all the details of their lives nor do I want them to invade my privacy. I despise this dogma that the company is your family. It's unhealthy and untrue. Also let's say you have an employee that believes that idea. What happens when you have to lay them off? Do they survive the rejection of being "disowned" by their family or not? Do you really want an employee who only lives for their job with no outside interests or anyone else to connect to? There is a difference between a workaholic and blind follower. Let me know your thoughts.
True. But your family doesn’t give you a paycheck tho
Oh a heretic, just in time for the Q2 opening sacrifice
Agreed. You are a team, not a family.
This is IMO the best way to view it without all the hypocrisy. You perform well in a team, you get rewarded. You don't, you get cut. No family bs.
Teams have coaches. They are there to help develop skills and grow the team. Families, not so much.
The corollary is basing your feeling of fulfillment on work life, instead of personal life.
Possibly. I do connect with my coworkers and I do care about them. I wouldn't pick them over my family. And I don't believe they would choose me either. And it's so fake. It's so much bravado and wind. I don't want to be manipulated at work this way.
Lol "biggest scam ever perpetuated" 😂😂😂 Are you Trump? If yes, your job is your family :)
Agree with OP. Work is work. Even if for achieving higher purpose, it's work. Not family. Sometimes work may take higher priority than family but never work=family
Agreed. I usually cringe when people say “we’re like a family”. It’s a manipulative way to get employees to sacrifice more for less pay. You can be friends with your coworkers but your job is not your family and they will fire you/let you go/not pay you fairly as soon as it’s convenient for the company.
Well, no shit. You’re just supposed to smile and nod like you believe it, though.
No shit OP, I don't want people like you on my team.

Google has a workforce crisis thanks to their leftist/woke ideology
You’re part of the problem. You can’t be mad at people if you don’t open up and give them the chance, they are not your enemy. You probably perceive it as “they don’t care”, but it sounds like you aren’t contributing anything to the idea of at least a professional friendship. You can’t have it both ways. You spend a good portion of your life at work, it doesn’t have to be miserable.
I do open up at work. And I've been burned for it. That veneer of acceptance and family isn't real. Do you honestly have a family environment at work? Go give a coworker a hug and see what happens. I dare you.
Doesn’t have to miserable nor does it have to be personal.
