I have a so called manager who is on same level as me. Apart from cracking lame jokes, I have never found him useful in anyway. I am taking over a big project from him and finding basic thinking missing in it. I like my work and don’t want him to take advantage of my hard work and use it as his achievements. I am concerned about my growth in the team, as he is also fighting for next level. Dont want to change teams till this year end. Should I talk to Skip level or HRBP? Any of you were in same situation? How did you over come?
Oh, you report to me?
Communication via tickets is an excellent way to do this
I don’t think you’ll get too far by telling your manager’s manager that your boss is weak. You’ll need specific data, and even then, you have to be very professional about it. Document the problems up front, come up with a plan to fix it, and communicate that in your skip level meetings. Let the facts speak for themselves and take credit for fixing the issues.
I've been through this. Leaving the team soon. Let him handle the complex project then
If he’s an ass, tell him that he is full of shit😉
1. Reflect that he is ass in his feedback with clear impact on customer or $$. Don't derive, don't conclude, don't use adjectives. 2. Instead of giving visibility to his demeanor, give visibility to your efforts and success. Drive Principle reviews, drive project management. You should be the single point of contact for your project. Keep him in Cc 3. Do not be percieved as going behind his back. Or crossing him. No one will want you then. 4. His promotion does not depend upon him taking credit for project. His promotion depends upon him enabling you or anyone else if you are incompetent to deliver this project successfully. 4.Your promotion depends upon you delivering this project. 5. Him giving you a broken project that you can fix, drive, and deliver successfully is a win win. (Project being broken could be intentional to set you up for great body of work and demonstrating that you got the chops). 6. If anyone from his team delivers the project he is getting promoted to be able to enable the team. 7. The question is do you understand the mechanics of promotions and are you willing to partner with him on a win win strategy.
Quite a few good suggestions. I doubt no. 5 though. We are dealing with a real project and not an interview problem. Everyone's gotta be committed to the success of the project. Tests have their place only in interview scenarios.
This is one among many of the strategies a manger could use to collect everyones support along the way. What better than, oh no one could come up with the right solution, we had so much back and forth, but this IC tackled the problem head on, brought everyone to the same page, and got their commitment. Think about that line as a manager
First focus on success of the project. Do not lose sight of that goal. All the other tips being mentioned in the responses come second to this primary goal. Disregard all suggestions that might sabotage the success of the project. Use the other ones to protect your rightful prize.
Be like dildo, my friend

Skip level, if nothing happens, skip skip level
If skip level doesn't help, OP should skip skip level and go to skip skip level. If skip skip level doesn't help, OP should skip skip skip level and go to skip skip skip level.
