Politically I am what you might have called “moderate” Republican supporter few years back. I am not considering current scenario, But I can’t support left too. The question is regarding my parents - we grew up in Midwest, my parents worked really hard , sacrificed so much to educate me and even supported me during my Ivy League school. They hardly have much savings except SS and some moderate pension and are living with us considering their old age. We live in a spacious house (5k sqft) in suburb with one kid. Now - they spend most of their time on social media, Alex Jones, Breitbart & foxnews and believe in most batshit right wing conspiracies and talk about it all the time. My spouse is a born and bred New Yorker and this conspiracy talk is driving us crazy. I can’t ask them to leave us as they really need our support. But I am afraid my wife is going to hit breaking point soon! My TC -690k.
Both.
Tell them no more Jones, Breitbart, or Fox. It's all propaganda. Don't make them watch CNN or MSNBC. That's crap too. Have them ready a book. I recommend A People's History of the United States.
It's crazy how biased all media is these days. NY times still has nuggets of good journalism.... Maybe BBC. WSJ decent but def right leaning... Zerohedge is interesting for a very different look at things with a grain of salt. Any others?
For TV stations, I'm a fan of Democracy Now and The Real News.
The best way to open someone’s mind is to give them experience. Take them to places or situations where their beliefs will be questioned.
Simple behavior modification should work. "Does Hillary Clinton run a child sex trafficking ring?" "No." "Here's your dinner."
Relax, let them believe to what they want. And stop talking about politics, there are many other interesting topics
Respect your parents and their differing viewpoints. Tell them politely you don't want to discuss politics. Steer them towards other topics they're interested talkimg about. Unless they've got some mental issues, they'll take the hint.
Learn to ignore and smile. You cannot change old people. Remember what they did for you. If it becomes too much, just go out for a jog. avoid political talk and give them their own TV in their room where they can watch fox news in isolation. Also, gently do state that your political point of view is no longer of someone born in midwest.
Laugh with them on these theories. "Dad, you belive the craziest shit. I love you " Don't argue too much. Laugh it off and share good jokes about Trump and Right wing extremist (not the lame ones about his daughter or his dick). Lighten things up a bit. Find common ground. Invite your immigrant friends or friends from other religions over (casually warn them beforehand and ask them to take things lightly as well). Give them exposure to other people. etc.

Just don’t talk about politics and current affairs. If I were you, I’d not waste time trying to change their opinions.
We have family dinner everyday together, this always comes up!
Try to keep the conversations about family and their health if they bring up politics/anything you dont like Also make them join some online sites if they can read and type for them to vent. I think everyone just wants to vent, they just need some people who can share their views and support their theories so they can go to bed thinking they’ve made something out of their day
