Need Advice: H1B wait vs Move out

Context: Lost H1B lottery 5 times already. Currently working on L1B visa. Have at least two more attempts. Changed team to OCI for better comp - was a let down (5% raise on Exceeds expectation, don’t expect much change in TC after RSU refresher). TC ~ 160k What’s the best option for me? Details about me: Relationship Status: Single - no problems in moving to a different country. Fairly confident about interviewing at other companies - have done competitive programming in past. Concerns: 1) TC in other countries is significantly lower than that in Bay Area - looks like only Zurich (Switzerland) has comparable compensation structure. 2) Not sure about the quality of work outside - am happy with the work and visibility I currently have. P.S: Serious advise only please.

Post your damn TC or GTFO

If your situation is not changing significantly in a year or two and you like US you could wait and then move

The only company worth going to Zurich is Google. If you pass the HC, go for it. Otherwise move to Singapore. The pay is high as well.

Yup. Airbnb sifnapore is 400k TC

Definitely wait if you want a chance at a career in the US. Life is very different in Zurich so it's more about lifestyle than salary to me. Once you get your H1B the green card then citizenship are a breeze. Just a matter of time. (I am from Europe, had two H1B myself and got my green card last year. Planning to wait for citizenship at this point)

Can you share the lifestyle difference since you have seen both. Also which one do you prefer and why? I’m caught in this dilemma of whether I should try moving to Zurich considering the endless Green card wait (Indian). Any input would be helpful thanks

Zurich is a lot smaller and quieter. If you are into a quiet lifestyle that revolves around work and having a good work life balance it shouldn't be an issue. Also you can hike around the city, go skiing and travel anywhere in Europe very easily (including driving) which to me is a better more enjoyable access to different languages and cultures. I live in NYC but have been to SF many times and I think if you like the west coast lifestyle you might like Zurich. I would advise to go there on vacation for a week and plan activities and meet locals to get a good feel of it. Hope that helps :)

Choose a country which is second best in term of opportunities.I would recommend the UK ,Canada or Singapore.

Bloomberg YUNOSlayer Jun 2, 2019

The UK might not be the best choice right now 😂

Amazon holdthedo Jun 2, 2019

Brexit yes but IMO tech opportunities are second best there.

What “stocks” email?

RSU refresh

No more RSU refreshes?

I have lived in sweden for 6 months and 4 months in Germany. IMO to settle you have to know their local language which was too much for me.

If you're nimble enough, you might as well take the last 2 attempts. Move if it doesn't pan out.

How long is L1B? I thought the max is 5(3+2).

Oracle YAengineer OP Jun 3, 2019

Yes, max is 5 years. Oracle has been applying for H1B from before that.
