I am joining Amazon as SDE 2 to bay area location. Till date, have only worked for startups. YOE (5 years). I am happy with the compensation for next 4 years. Don't see my self complaining about it even if it stays the same. I am just scared about the all the things I have heard about Amazon Culture being (work-life balance, Competitive, no perks, etc ). All I want to do is to go, do my job, be a team player, and come back to my family. I still have 15 days to join Amazon. What is the best advice you can give that I should follow for the next four years at least? UPDATE for the people asking about TC: TC = 245K
Why did you want to join Amazon if you dont like their culture or feel you won't fit into their culture?
(Job Profile + Mix reviews about culture + TC)
You know, if you're worried about the culture or the company (perks, etc) dont take the role. You'll feel miserable after an year, probably won't even stay long enough to reap the benefits of Amazon's stocks. I know this isn't the advice which you're looking for. But, yeah think about it.
Honestly if you don’t like team just switch out. Some management is really good to work with while others are garbage. Big company don’t be afraid to move.
What’s your TC? :)
TC?
Advice: document everything (design decisions, work tasks, rationale, 1:1s, progress, no progress, etc.). If you are ever put on pivot, you can use these to defend your work. Yes, this is what I learnt at Amazon.
What's pivot?
Pivot is pre-IPO, oops, pre-PIP
Did you like the team, culture, and manager of team you interviewed with? If so, go. Do your best, and chances are you’ll be fine. All companies manage low performers out. Amazon is really no different in that regard. That said if you don’t agree with the leadership principles or didn’t get good vibe from team you should worry about that and not the possibility of getting managed out.
Join A9, comp is similar/higher but fantastic wlb, double amazons vacation days, and starts off with 4 weeks pto which jumps to 5.4 weeks after a year. Free snacks/drinks but difficulty of getting in is probably similar to fb/g.
It is my first day at A9 after an internal transfer process from Amazon. Any advice? In my offer letter it said on behalf of Amazon not A9 though
Advice for what?
My condolences
