I am relocation to Raleigh from NYC (Currently living in Jersey City). Can someone give me an idea about the expenses for a family of 4. 2 Adults and 2 kids under age of 5. What's the best places to live if my office is in RTP area. Also what would be the best places to rent? FYI, I am an Indian and would prefer a mixed neighborhood around. Also what would be the best place to buy an apartment where I can get best education for my kids as well as a good neighborhood which is safe and children can play out and mingle with other kids. Thanks in advance

I have lived there for over 4 years and never ever experienced racism. I was in contact with more Americans than Indians. Alright YMMV, I would say it's extremely unlikely that you will find racism to be a systemic problem in the RTP area.

Well I don't care about it much as it's everywhere, and sometimes reason is understandable too. I am more interested in knowing the area and the tips before I relocate...

Look at the Cary or Holly Springs area. Great demographics and plenty of choices if you chose to private school. Public schools bus kids so your kids may not go close to where they live. My family moved from Indiana four and a half years ago and never see ourselves moving back. Regarding the racism comments, there are plenty of transplants from all over the world in Wake county (Raleigh and metropolitan area) so I think you'll be just fine. I will say there are some rural areas that could get sketchy, but you can have that anywhere.

I loved in Cary/Morrisville for years. Great location and schools all over the county are pretty good. Expect to be able to buy a single family home for less than 400k pretty easily in a decent neighborhood. Also expect to become a 2 car family if you aren't already.

Durham is probably the hipper my interesting city but also slightly more crime, depending on the exact area.

But there are lots of Indian families in the area and the Universities. You'll be fine.

It should be much cheaper than jersey to be honest.

Durham county has one of the highest rates of violent crime in NC.

I'd stick to Wake county - Raleigh, Morrisville, Wake Forest, Cary, Apex or Holly Springs.

I'm from Raleigh. Best places to live are in Cary or North Raleigh. I'd discourage against Cary though, it's too much of an Indian monoculture these days.

That's a good suggestion. Don't want to live in mini India for sure...

The house I grew up in is reasonably big and is < $300k today.

I'm glad you agree. I personally would like to raise my kids in a diverse area like I was.

I love Raleigh. I've been here since 2001. We just built a house in a new neighborhood and love it. If you want a yard, nice neighbors, and no traffic, check out Sweetwater by Satterwhite Construction. Houses are $400-515k, but all over 3000 sq ft with an acre lot..AND TREES! It is less than a mile to Neuse River Trail and 15-18 minutes from downtown Raleigh.

Happy to answer any questions. I'd avoid living near Brier Creek unless you work in RTP. Getting downtown via Glenwood Avenue SUCKS.

PS. Parade of Homes starts in a few weeks. You should definitely visit then and tour neighborhoods.

Raleigh is all tech. Specifically it's all Indian tech. Cary and Morrisville are like 90% Indian. They are also where the Indian festivals are. You should be comfortable there.

Cary/holly springs is your best bet. Cost of living is slightly higher there than in raleigh proper but it's nice and quuet
