Need to buy health insurance. Where to start?

I’ve had a job all my life so I’ve never had to shop for health insurance. Now I plan to take some time off from work and will need to fund my own health insurance. Where do I begin? Is there a good website where I can compare different products offered by diff companies? Any pointers on what to look for, what to avoid? I live in SoCal, San Diego, north county. I’m in good health and don’t have any special needs. Thanks for any insights you can offer!

Covered California

Covered CA makes you go through and extensive application form. Some of the info is not true yet, like income. At the end there’s a bunch of legal agreements, not sure if I should sign it.

If you are not earning can’t you apply for Medi-Cal? Did you check?

Had to Google Medi-Cal, that’s how ignorant I am. LOL. Unfortunately (or fortunately) I will have income from cap gains so I probably won’t qualify.

Cobra?

Prolly going to be expensive. Check covered California or just go to Kaiser directly

But the plan is same to what he had before and definitely much better than cc or kaiser.

How old are you? 60? 70? Just go to ambulatory if you get sick, damnit.

Definitely check Apples Cobra rates. Especially if you're older than the average Apple employee your premiums will be a lot lower than with an external plan. if you can, report back here what the Cobra rates are as I'm curious to compare companies benefits.

Cobra: $560 for saver PPO, $613 for Plus PPO, $441 for Kaiser SoCal. Is that low or high?

I believe these are for single and it’s normal considering the benefits.
