Got Google L4 and Facebook E5 offers. Currently L6 at Amazon. Has anyone managed to negotiate level with Google in past with or without additional interviews? Also, if Google matches FB comp, is it worth re-interviewing to get higher level?
To confirm, they won't budge on level. It shouldn't matter that much; promo will be easy if you really are that under levelled.
How long it takes for "easy" promo?
To L5, a year or 1 1/2 years - but it shouldn't slow eventual promo to L6 by very much. Also, the pay difference between L4 SEE and L5 CME is negligible. If you plan on sticking around for a few years, it won't matter much what level you came in at, as long as the initial stock comp is good.
How much were the offers?
same boat. they did not negotiate. at the pace of Google, an easy promo will be around 1 year?
At least one year, and re-apply every half a year.
Wouldnt Amazon L6 to Google T4 be a significant level downgrade?
Yes it's one level down.
Google levels start at 3
How much level matters in long run at Google (Specially if they match fb E5 comp at L4)?
Ex google/current fb recruiter here. You won’t be able to negotiate level. Take the fb 5 role. It’s not easy to move up at google. Also fb and google normally have the exact same leveling so if google says 4, then they think you are junior. Your growth will be much faster at fb. Google takes about 1.5+ years and there have been ppl in their roles 6+ years with no upleveling at all. Dropping 2 levels to get into google is harsh especially l4 which is very junior.
I recommend taking the fb offer. Promo at google is difficult even for seasoned engineers. They are not going to uplevel your offer once they set it.
Doesn't lower level mean less responsibilities? If comp isn't that different, why to take additional stress and responsibilities of L5/E5?
Well if you wanna come at it that way, sure. Keep in mind though that refreshers and base increases are tied to level so the later you get to 5, the later your refreshes will be commensurate.
Take FB offer
Google won't budge on level. Tell them to fuck off and take the FB offer. Promo is not a given, even if highly qualified. You need to demonstrate impact, and convince peers to support you. Impact means designing and landing a meaty project. You must show a committee a design doc with your name as the owner. And management must not terminate your team or project before you launch. Peer support means finding people L+1 and L+2 to write nice things about you. This process becomes more political, and in general the higher level someone is the more chance they will be a conniving asshole. If you join Google at L4 (a downgrade) you are taking an uncompensated risk.
What’s your experience like at google internally? Do people have fair opportunity for growth internally?
Meh that’s the whole point of the initial comp offer. Equity for four years plus additional grants should be fine so you don’t sweat promo. Especially if you exceed expectations at 4.

Will Tesla have just one round of 10% layoffs or multiple rounds of layoffs?
Was on same boat, Google would not budge about level but will match compensation
What happens to comp when you get your raise then? You get a small one which bring you back into the band of your new level?
Yes, unless you're a rockstar you will get calibrated over the next few bumps. Lower base increase and lower refresher. It's general practice to align salaries into common range for the level.
